Many of you may have seen or heard that our beautiful, red covered bridge suffered extensive damage yesterday morning during a severe thunderstorm that brought 70 mph winds through Union City.
While we're heartbroken due to the destruction, we're sincerely thankful no one was injured.
The covered bridge was just one of the many dreams of our late founder & longtime President, Larry Amspaugh.
Larry & many other volunteers, including members of the Lions Club, worked very hard to complete the bridge for its debut at the start of the 2021 season. In addition, several local businesses generously donated materials &/or labor.
We are certain Larry was looking down, shaking his head, most likely saying a few choice words to Mother Nature, lol! Because, without fail, she brings AT LEAST one major wind or snow event per season! This is the first time, however, she has struck so violently off-season.
If Larry were here, he would say, with complete confidence & without hesitation, "Mother Nature, you are not going to win this one! Now let's get busy & get that beautiful bridge back up!"
A Community Christmas volunteers want to assure you we are determined to do everything in our power to do just that!
We are deeply touched by those who have already reached out to offer labor, materials, equipment, & even money, to make it happen. The people in our wonderful little community always come together when there's a need! Thank you!!
In 2025, the bridge was appropriately designated "Amspaugh Crossing." We are looking forward to the day when those words will be displayed once again on the structure that has so proudly towered over the Little Mississinewa River for the past five seasons.
Please enjoy these pictures of the beautiful red covered bridge, & free to share any pictures you may have in the comments below.
We will post updates on the bridge as they develop.
