After 40 years of unwavering dedication to the fire service, North Hudson 2nd Battalion Chief Mike Giacumbo will officially retire as the clock strikes midnight on his 65th birthday.
This morning at 0800 hours, Mikey “G” took his final walk out of the firehouse, surrounded by family, friends, coworkers, and the countless people whose lives and careers he has touched. 43rd Street in Union City, from Bergenline Avenue to Kennedy Boulevard, was lined with well-wishers to honor a man who has given so much to this profession.
Mike began his career with the former West New York Fire Department and spent four decades answering every call with professionalism, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the people he served. As Chief of North Hudson’s 2nd Battalion—the busiest battalion in the department, responding to 3,127 calls in 2025—he led from the front and earned the respect of everyone who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
Some careers are measured by years. Mike’s is measured by the firefighters he mentored, the citizens he protected, and the example he set every single day. He is, without question, one of the most respected chiefs our department has ever had.
Congratulations, Chief Giacumbo. Thank you for your leadership, your friendship, your mentorship, and your 40 years of service. Enjoy every moment of your well-earned retirement.
