Dear Friend of the Underhill Historical Society,

Check out all the good work your neighbors have been doing at Town Meeting Tuesday. Take a few minutes before or after the meeting to say hello at our table at Browns River Middle School. Learn about UHS accomplishments over the last year, and see many interesting displays and historic photos. And we have free booklets about Underhill history!

On this very day, September 26, 1954 at 6PM EST live broadcast television officially came to Vermont. This historic moment was due to the investment of WCAX Radio station owner Charles Hasbrook, and his newly formed Television Network WMVT-TV, and the large transmitter & antenna he constructed atop Mount Mansfield in Stowe, VT.

Here is the only known footage from the very first televised broadcast across the Green Mountain State, the very first few seconds of that historic moment in our states history.

Enjoy!

Grant Allendorf and Roger Frey of the Underhill Historical Society will share the history of development of skiing on the western side of Mt. Mansfield in the late 1930's when the Underhill Winter Sports Club worked with the State of Vermont and the Civilian Conservation Corps in cutting several trails, including the still popular Teardrop Trail. Jamie Ide will talk about his research on the skiing infrastructure on the Underhill side of Mt. Mansfield. In the mid-40's the Underhill Winter Sports Club was purchased by John Dubrow and Em and William Dubrow who renamed it Underhill Ski Bowl. Allendorf will show an entertaining short video of the Ski Bowl. Joining him to recall its heyday will be Suzy Abair, the Dubrow's daughter who literally grew up at the ski area. The evening will be moderated by Vermont ski historian Brian Lindner.

A mystery that can’t seem to be cracked, who was J.L. Berry of Underhill, VT? A little under 10 years ago this maple syrup tin surfaced at a local auction. For years little insight into the individual, or the story of Shamrock A Farm was able to be gained. That was up until within the past few years when access to the Vermont State Newspaper Archive became available. With the archive access the first name was identified as James L. Berry. Also, discovered were two newspaper label advertisements from the Messenger-Sentinel Co of Morrisville, VT dating from 1932 & 1936. Who were the actual producers of the very label on the syrup tin! No obituaries where discovered to match this gentleman in the archive, his wife was always referred to as Mrs. James L. Berry, so we couldn’t find hers either to help gain answers. Looking through the database of buried graves across Vermont, shows one potential match with a James Lester Berry buried in Richmond. His obituary however doesn’t reference him as a farmer, or having had any association to maple sugaring, or the town of Underhill. So as of now the mystery still remains as to where exactly this farm was. When looking through the newspaper archives there was a minor mention of Irish Settlement and a mention in the land that is now the Ethan Allen Firing Range/Guard Base that took over the Town of Nashville, VT are potentially where this once was. My suspicion is that Mr.Berry potentially moved away from Vermont though, and perhaps passed away in a different state.

Eli Dandurand (left) & Roger Frey (right). After 4+ years of hard work, these two gentlemen are owed all the credit for making this Vermont State Historic Marker reality. The UHS is fortunate to have these two dedicated historians. Many countless hours spent researching and planning, and we owe them an immense amount of gratitude and appreciation for all of their contributions over all this time!
