You can still spice things up in winter. In Florida, herbs can be grown during the cooler months. Coriander, thyme, parsley, chives and fennel all fare well. Just be sure to protect these plants during frosts and freezes.

Things to plant in January-

There are many types of flowers that can be planted during Florida’s winter. If you want some pleasant blooms to enjoy, these species are ideal for the season.

*Generally, if planting at the beginning of the season, you can plant by seed. If planting towards the end, you can use transplants. However, each plant varies in its success as a transplant or seed, so check with your local county UF/IFAS Extension agent for more information on planting in your area. https://go.ufl.edu/Extension

November in Central Florida is an excellent month for planting popular leafy greens, flowers, herbs, and other Florida cool-season crops in the garden.

With shorter days and a refreshing drop in temperature and humidity, conditions are optimal for growing temperate edible plants; started directly from seed or transplanted into the garden.

It’s also a great time to gather seeds from any of your remaining summer crops as they mature, enrich garden beds with compost, mulch around perennials in preparation for winter, and join in Fall Festivals & gardening events!

The Umatilla Public Library invites you to a free class on Plant Propagation on Monday, October 20 at 2pm. Garden Club members, this is an opportunity for us to support our library and learn something new. The class will be taught by a UF/IFAS master gardener.
