Nineteen years ago today, the crew of Northwest Airlines Flight 908 encountered one of the rarest failures a Boeing 747 crew could face: the loss of all three Inertial Navigation Systems shortly after takeoff from Taipei during severe weather.

With limited instrumentation, no dependable weather radar, language barriers with air traffic control, and thunderstorms surrounding the airport, the crew declared an emergency and worked together through four approach attempts before safely landing the aircraft.

Their professionalism and calm decision-making under extraordinary pressure earned Capt. Dennis Leighton, First Officer Edward Sparks, and Second Officer David Kritzer ALPA's Superior Airmanship Award. Their actions that day nearly two decades ago serve as a lasting reminder of the critical importance of always having at least two skilled airline pilots on the flight deck.

Breeze Airways Pilots play a vital role in connecting communities across the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean, flying to 77 destinations across North America.

With more than 700 professional pilots operating a fleet of EMB190s and A220s from 11 bases across the U.S., Breeze pilots first became an ALPA member in 2022. It's not unusual for airline pilots to pursue other interests when they're not flying for their airline. Capt. Ramin Pourteymour (United Pilots) is no exception to that.

It all began with a trip to Playa de Rosarito, Mexico. Pourteymour spotted an injured, malnourished dog on the roadside. "I couldn't look away," he remembered. "I just had to stop the car." Since then, he's rescued over 1,000 and founded Last Hope 4 Paws, a non-profit dedicated to saving abandoned dogs and cats.

The ALPA-represented pilots of cargo airline, Amerijet International ALPA Pilots are building a stronger future together as they negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement. Throughout 2025, Amerijet pilot leaders and the Negotiating Committee worked closely with fellow pilots to identify bargaining priorities, participate in ALPA-sponsored negotiations training, and strengthen pilot unity.

As Amerijet continues exploring opportunities to expand operations in new and existing markets, the pilot group remains committed to protecting and advancing the careers of both current and future pilots.

Did you know the illuminated "Fasten Seatbelt" sign on airplanes is the result of ALPA advocacy?

After a passenger on one of his flights was seriously injured by turbulence, Capt. Ray Lahr (United, ret.) spent years leading the charge for illuminated seatbelt signs on commercial aircraft. His efforts helped lead to FAA approval of the regulation in 1981.

Today, turbulence remains one of aviation's most persistent operational hazards and a leading cause of in-flight injuries. That's why ALPA continues to push for tools and technologies that help pilots better predict, avoid and manage turbulence to protect passengers and crews.

The road to reduced crew operations stops here. 💪

This week, ALPA President Capt. Jason Ambrosi and ALPA Canada Vice President Capt. Gilles Boissonneault represented the organization at the ITF - International Transport Workers' Federation's strategy meeting to align priorities with fellow transport unions and garner strength in the fight against reduced crew operations.

Alongside ITF General Secretary Steve Cotton and Assistant General Secretary Rob Johnston, our union provided the pilot perspective on the world stage.

Alaska Airlines Pilots pilots connect more than 100 destinations across North America, Central America, and the Pacific, safely transporting millions of passengers while supporting one of the industry's most recognizable carriers. Flying a fleet of 254 Boeing 737 aircraft from six pilot bases across the West Coast and Alaska, these pilots have proudly been represented by ALPA since 1947.

Since late last year, the Alaska Master Executive Council has been focused on negotiating a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement alongside Hawaiian Airlines pilots, working in lockstep to prioritize unity and create a collaborative culture as the two airlines advance the merger process.
