The next dancer in our series of Arise Dancer insights is our wonderful creative director, April Hatton!

A lifelong dancer, April has used her gifts of creativity, artistry, wisdom, and grace in each of her endeavors, and we are so blessed by her leadership!

Here are her insights into her experience with Arise this Spring:

1. What has been the most meaningful piece to you this Spring? Why?

- "That would have to be 'Revelations'! When the Lord gave me the idea for us to dance to pure scripture from Revelation, it felt exciting and intimidating, and once we started rehearsing, it has challenged me continuously. 'Revelations' also contains a lot of purpose and hope to me personally. I pray that it is expressed and captured by the audience members."

2. Where have you seen growth in your artistry this Spring?

- "I have been stewing on the idea of bringing these biblical stories to life for the past couple of years. I think, as an artist and choreographer, we're tapping into a different style, and it demands particular techniques when you are sharing stories. Something I keep reminding our dancers this semester is that it's not just the movement; you must also express the character and emotion that comes with that person. So, that has been a challenge and growth I've seen us all tackle."

3. Describe a specific moment that captures your experience dancing with Arise this Spring?

- "The first Arise rehearsal we had this semester, I was blown away by the favor and the power of the Lord. We went from seven dancers last semester to fifteen in just a couple of weeks. My dream and calling in life is to "Arise" dancers for the Lord, for Him to be glorified, and for the army of dancers to show up. And that is exactly what He did. The Lord blows my mind all the time with His goodness and favor, but that day I felt Him smile at me and, in His way, say to me, 'I see you. I've got this.'"

Next in our series of Arise Dancer insights is the shining Stefanie Schindler!

Since joining us last Fall, Stefanie has brought her years of technique and gifts of wisdom, encouragement, and artistry to Arise in such a beautiful way. We are so thankful for her!

Here are her insights into her experiences with Arise this Spring:

1. What has been the most meaningful piece to you this Spring? Why?

- "I would say it has been 'Bridesmaids'. It speaks to the current season I am in personally, of waiting and longing for what Jesus has for me. The constant gaze on the door that the Bridegroom will beckon us from is a powerful picture for me as I press past lies and doubts and keep moving constantly towards Him."

2. Where have you seen growth in your artistry this Spring?

- "I would definitely say it's in being asked to perform a solo for the first time. I did not dance growing up, and only began ballet in my mid-20s. Now, being in my mid-40s, I have spent years watching so many different dancers, and especially my own daughter, express their love for Jesus through movement. My focus in two decades of dance training has always been to just do everything right, but I've learned from these shining examples that dance is not about being right but about being who you are in the movements. So, in practicing for a solo, I have been working to meld two decades of technique training for a newfound passion for expressing to Jesus how much I love and trust Him."

3. Describe a specific moment that captures your experience dancing with Arise this Spring.

- "For me, it was a moment when our Director, April, shared with us her original vision for Arise Dance Company being a group of dancers who have 'arisen out of the ashes' and are now on fire for the Lord. This being only my second semester with Arise, I can still sometimes feel like a newbie, but when April spoke that phrase earlier this semester, there was just a knowing deep inside that I belonged there."

Our next dancer in our Arise Dancer insight series is the creative Gianna McMillan!

Joining Arise just this Spring, Gianna is our newest dancer and has brought a beautiful, creative spirit to our group. A lifelong dancer, Gianna took a brief break to attend cosmetology school, but has returned to her love of dance, and we are so thankful for her!

Here are her insights into her experiences this Spring with Arise:

1. What has been the most meaningful piece to you this Spring? Why?

- "The most meaningful piece for me this season has been 'Bridesmaids', because it tells a story about staying patient with His plan, as well as staying in His presence. This has been resonating with me in this season of waiting and figuring out my next moves. Overall, trust the Lord with all your heart."

2. Where have you seen growth in your artistry this Spring?

- "I have grown in patience regarding dance. I have always been hard on myself in dance, and this season I have learned to be more understanding, which has impacted my artistry overall."

3. Describe a specific moment that captures your experience dancing with Arise this Spring.

- "A moment that describes my experience in my first season of Arise would be the simple moments that I have with the girls, and Jerrod, talking about dance and how much they enjoy the gift God has given them, also. These moments of joy with each of them are one of the reasons I keep going back to dance."

Shining brightly for the Lord, Kristen's gifts of dance, painting, and vocal artistry have blessed our community at Arise since 2021. We are so thankful for her joy and light!

Here are her insights into her experience with Arise this Spring:

1. What has been the most meaningful piece to you this Spring? Why?

- "I think the piece 'Revelations' has been the most meaningful to me because it's a reminder that an end will come, detailed in such an impactful way in this book, and that we need to be ready. We need to live our lives in a way that honors the Lord, and with everything going on in the world, we must stay focused, keeping our eyes on Him. We must run our race and fulfill the purpose He has for us, until He calls us home, or until His triumphant return! As such, incorporating movement into the words in this book is so powerful."

2. Where have you seen growth in your artistry this Spring?

- "I feel that my technique and flexibility have improved this semester as I pushed myself to do my best. Especially being 10 months postpartum, I have really challenged myself!"

3. Describe a specific moment that captures your experience dancing with Arise this Spring.

- "Honestly, just putting movement to such powerful scriptures and songs has captured my experience. There is such power in making them literally come to life through dance; in this, I am serving the Lord."

Here are her insights into her experience with Arise this Spring:

1. What has been the most meaningful piece to you this Spring? Why?

- "It's very difficult to pick just one piece, but I would probably have to say 'Ruth and Naomi' has been the most meaningful one to me. It is a duet that I get to perform with our incredible Ms. Nancy, who was my dance teacher for many years, and it is such a special opportunity to perform this piece alongside her."

2. Where have you seen growth in your artistry this Spring?

- "In this show, we get to perform so many different pieces, with very different characters, so I have definitely felt growth in how I physically express becoming each of my characters through dance."

3. Describe a specific moment that captures your experience dancing with Arise this Spring.

- "It is difficult to pick just one moment, so I would have to say that the joy and support there is for everyone during each rehearsal captures my experience this Spring."

Here are her insights into this semester with Arise:

1. What has been the most meaningful piece to you this Spring? Why?
- "I've been really thinking on the Bridesmaids piece and the scripture it covers. All in all, it really makes me consider the time I have and whether or not I am using it well."

- "It has been super fun to learn and grow in my artistry with the modern pieces! They have been both stretching and fun, as they are different than what we typically do."

Opening our series of Arise Dancer insights is... Annie Fells! She has been with Arise for four years, following her graduation from Compass Dance Academy in 2022.

Here are her insights into her experience this Spring, with Arise:

1. What has been the most meaningful piece to you this Spring? Why?
- "It was difficult to make a decision here, but I believe the most meaningful piece to me is 'Mary of Bethany'. Diving into the mindset and feelings of Mary has been an enriching experience for me, as it has pushed me to delve deeper into my Bible reading to understand her joy, her worship, and the foreshadowing of Christ's sacrifice on the cross following the resurrection of her brother, Lazarus. Personally, I feel that it has drawn me closer to the Lord, and I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to grow in this piece.

2. Where have you seen growth in your artistry this Spring?
- "As with every season, I have noticed my artistry differing and maturing over this Spring session. Specifically, I have been feeling more grounded in my movement, and am increasingly more able to focus on creative expression."

3. Describe a specific moment that captures your experience dancing with Arise this Spring.
- "One moment that stands out to me particularly was in the most recent rehearsal of the piece 'Bridesmaids'. The choreography is so earthy and emotional; the contrast in movements between the sets of dancers, especially notable in this rehearsal, struck my spirit. All in all, this moment of raw emotion and earthy creativity in movement, captures my overarching experience dancing with Arise this Spring.
