Some conversations just need the right setting. And this was it.

Gov. Rick Perry and I got together to talk about “Black Betty,” the triple-black Mustang heading to Mecum Auctions Dallas/Fort Worth, at a ’50s-era service station with so much character it felt like a Hollywood film set.

But our chat was about more than just a great pony car. Proceeds from its sale will support the work Americans For Ibogaine is doing to advance understanding and responsible medical access to ibogaine therapy for people struggling with addiction, trauma and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Excited to see Rick and the AFI team keep pushing forward and working to bring new options to people who need them most.

Grateful for the opportunity to meet with U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche and Dr. Kristine Blanche for an important conversation about the future of psychedelic medicine in America.

We discussed Federal Right to Try access, particularly for end-of-life patients, the responsibilities of the DOJ and DEA under Executive Order 14401, and the importance of ensuring that psychedelic medicines can reach patients safely and responsibly as they move through the federal approval process.

We also discussed the work ahead to educate law enforcement and the broader justice system about the therapeutic potential of these medicines.

The Honey Badger was our “spirit animal” for a conversation with CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz about what it will take to build a treatment system that puts patients first.

We discussed the need for the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation to develop a treatment and payment model that protects quality care from predatory corporate capture while ensuring access for every American, especially those who rely on Medicare and Medicaid.

If we are going to bring transformative treatments into the American healthcare system, access and integrity have to be built into the model from the beginning.
