At the Superior Hiking Trail Association, we believe in the power of joy, especially right now when times are hard. Joy is more than a fleeting feeling. It’s a steady presence, a state of being that can persist even through challenge and uncertainty.

Longtime S*TA volunteer Zach Johns recently shared with us how the Superior Hiking Trail brings him joy:

“There are many moments of joy that happen on the Trail, from the relief of finally summiting a mountain where you get to take in a breathtaking vista or getting to a campsite to enjoy a snack after a hard day. How you shed your pack for the final time and feel a cool breeze blow across your back as you sit down on one of the benches, and scan the site for the best spot to pitch your tent. There is something indescribable about that feeling of being in camp after a hard day on the trail - it's the culmination of what I've called ‘joyful misery’ - how sometimes a day on the trail is tough, it may be hot and buggy or cold and muddy and somehow at the same time it's fun!”

If you have also found joy on the S*T, we invite you to support the trail that brings you joy by making a donation today. When you give, you’re not just maintaining a Trail, you’re nurturing joy.

For four decades, the Superior Hiking Trail has brought people together to experience the joy of something larger than ourselves. One of our volunteers, Melissa Turgeon, shared with us how the Trail has brought her joy:

“I was absolutely HOOKED after my first volunteering experience. I was able to give back to a place I have spent so much time since the 1990's. I plan my whole summer around volunteer experiences! Last year was the first year I brought my daughter, Hazel. That leveled up my happiness, as she saw folks, young and old, participating and giving back. I wanted to impress upon her the amount of human power it takes to maintain a beautiful local resource. She couldn't stop talking about it on the way home and was giggling as she recounted the funny stories shared around the campfire. I am looking forward to volunteering in a few weeks to reconnect with familiar faces, spend time giving back, and driving home with a big smile on my face.”

The S*T is where joy comes to life. But the Trail, this source of joy, depends on all of us! Donate today at the link below to ensure the Trail continues to be a source of joy for you, for our community, and for all who seek it in the years to come.

Blazing Trail: 40 Years on the Superior Hiking Trail Episode 4 - Making Family Memories on the Superior Hiking Trail

Listen here: https://wtip.org/archives/blazing-trail-making-family-memories-on-the-superior-hiking-trail/

The Superior Hiking Trail provides great opportunities to connect people of all ages with wild spaces. In Episode 4 we meet Jody Nonnemacher, a North Shore grandmother who has established the tradition of hiking with each of her grandchildren when they turn five-years-old. She talks about how to prepare for a hike with young children, and the importance of creating healthy habits related to walking in the woods together.

In the second half we talk to Henry Downing and Erin Soderberg Downing, a mother and son who tackled 100 miles of the S*T while Erin was doing research for her middle-grade novel “Just Keep Walking.” The hike inspired the storyline for the book and deepened the real-life connection between the two of them, proving that families can do hard things and that connections made on the trail sometimes last a lifetime.
