S*T Q***r work days are back! Saturday, August 8th and Sunday, August 9th from 9am-3:30pm. You can register for one or both days using the link below.

We'll be working on a couple of muddy, degraded sections of the S*T along Keene Creek. Our goal will be to harden the trail (add rocks, etc) to provide better footing, get users up out of the mud, and minimize erosion. Materials are near at hand, though some may require a creek crossing to move them to the work site. The worksite is withing a half mile of the trailhead.

Visit the link below for location information and to register. Please register in advance we so can plan for numbers and equipment needs:

https://superiorhiking.my.salesforce-sites.com/registerForVolunteerShifts?cid=701Ux00000r24SPIAY

No experience needed! We will teach all skills and learn from each other. We'll work at the pace of the group and take breaks throughout the day. Just bring yourself and provisions for yourself (snacks, water, lunch). Wear close-toed footwear and long pants. S*TA will provide PPE (gloves, hard hats), though if you have gloves that fit you, bring them along.

**While we love our allies, this event is for only those who are Q***r identified.

The S*TA regularly partners with organizations to host private volunteer events. If your organization is interested in partnering with us on a private volunteer event, please email [email protected].

This year the Superior Hiking Trail turns 40. We are celebrating by looking back at the events of the past forty years that brought us to today with our From the Overlook blog series. We will trace the Trail’s journey from a bold idea to the current 300-mile footpath. Read the series of short stories each month to learn how the Trail became a living link between people, place, and purpose. Read this month's story below.

"National Trails Day 2005 marked the opening of the first official Superior Hiking Trail segment in Duluth, from Skyline Parkway to Twin Ponds. Hikers quickly discovered that despite being within city limits, the new sections felt rugged, steep, and surprisingly wild..."

There have been recent reports of wasp activity along the Superior Hiking Trail, most specifically under boardwalks or puncheon.

Wasps/Hornets are a seasonal hazard on the S*T, generally in the summer months, and can be encountered anywhere along the Trail. Please use caution, stay aware of your surroundings, and carry Epinephrine or other prescribed medication if you have a known allergy.

To help protect the natural environment, and ensure chemicals are not introduced, the S*TA does not spray for or remove wasp nests.

You can help the hiking community by sharing locations of wasp nests you encounter in our Facebook group.

Last minute volunteer openings on one of our popular S*TA backpacking teams!

Help build a short reroute on the Cascade Loop Trail from Friday, August 7 to Sunday, August 9. The crew will start by clearing a corridor for the new trail, and then put the new trail in place. Activities will include cutting brush and using hand tools to build the trail.

This is a strenuous trip that is open to volunteers with at least one day of trail maintenance experience. Previous backpacking experience is required. You must commit to all three days, and you will need to provide all your own food and backpacking gear. In addition, you will carry 5-10 lbs of S*TA-provided tools to the site. The hike into the campsite is about two miles and mostly uphill.

If a strenuous trip is your jam, please join us!

A construction project in Duluth’s Chester Park near the 8th/9th Street bridge will close and reroute the trail through the park until the project is complete, likely this fall. Northbound users should cross to the trail on the west side of Chester Creek at the first pedestrian bridge they see in the park. Users will go under the 8th/9th Street bridge, and then utilize the next pedestrian bridge to cross the creek and rejoin the Trail. Southbound users should use the inverse directions.

The theme for our Trail Renewal Program over the next few years is bridges. This year we will be constructing two new bridges. The former Devil Track Tributary Bridge was removed last year necessitating a 5-mile reroute including a 3-mile road walk. A new bridge spanning the Devil Track Tributary has been a priority replacement project for the S*TA. A few weeks ago, the Onion River Bridge replacement began with the removal of the old bridge and building of abutments for the new bridge that will be installed this fall. You can help build the new bridges at these upcoming volunteer events:

Devil Track Tributary Bridge, Tuesday, September 8 - Sunday, September 13
Onion River Bridge, Wednesday, September 30 - Sunday, October 4

The Superior Hiking Trail needs YOU. Help fund Trail Renewal Projects by becoming a Member.

The S*T’s last section was built in 2017, and at the same time, assessments revealed boardwalks and staircases were showing wear, sections of tread were muddy, and areas were suffering from erosion. How did the S*TA and S*T community rise to the occasion? The answer is the same as it was in 1986 when early Trail blazers were building the Trail: Together.

In 2018, the Trail Renewal Program launched focusing on maintenance, long-term sustainability, and resilience in the face of extreme weather events. Attention turned to the sections most in need of restoration, affectionately nicknamed "The Big Bad Five.” Hundreds of volunteers and thousands of members set to work to renew these areas.

Today, the Gooseberry gap has been closed, the Split Rock River and Bean and Bear Loops renewed, and the multi-year Cascade River Loop project that addressed flood damage from 2022 is set to wrap this summer.

The Trail Renewal Program exists because of the generosity of our members who have stepped up to ensure these projects are funded. Now it's your turn. Support the Trail Renewal Program during the S*T’s 40th year. Become a member today.
