Navajo veterans begin annual Honor Walk ahead of National Vietnam War Veterans Day

On Tuesday, 25th Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley offered her support to Navajo veterans participating in the 17th Annual Vietnam War Veterans Honor Walk in Smith Lake, New Mexico.

Navajo veterans coordinate the annual weeklong walk to honor Diné Vietnam veterans leading up National Vietnam War Veterans Day, observed on March 29.

“This annual journey reflects the strength, resilience, and sacrifice of our Diné veterans, many of whom continue to lead with courage long after their military service. We are grateful for their dedication and proud to stand with them as they carry forward this tradition,” said Speaker Curley.

The walk began on Tuesday in the community of Thoreau, and will conclude in Farmington on Friday. The veterans group will host an event on Saturday to commemorate the sacrifices and service of Navajo veterans who served during the Vietnam War.

The honor walk route follows Highway 371, designated as the New Mexico Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway, from Thoreau to Farmington.

The 25th Navajo Nation Council urges motorists traveling along Highway 371 to drive with caution and remain alert for walkers. For more information, contact Mike Bekis at (505) 258-3216.

The New Mexico Department of Veterans Services invites women veterans to a networking event designed to strengthen communication and connection within our community.

Guests will receive a brief program overview, followed by an opportunity for open discussion and questions.
Your feedback and perspectives are invaluable in guiding future initiatives and advancing our mission to serve the Women Veterans population in New Mexico.
