Christine Cherrington Memorial Merit Competition Winners Announced
The Christine Cherrington Memorial Merit Competition is facilitated by the Education Committee of Cascadia Music and seeks to support and encourage local music students to showcase their work. The prizes are awarded to the top three “outstanding music students of the year” as determined by a live performance in front of a panel of three volunteer judges.
Established in memory of Cascadia’s director Christine Cherrington, who passed away unexpectedly in 1991, the Cherrington Memorial Scholarship funds the merit competition and an annual financial aid program for music lessons for valley children. Created by her family soon after her passing, the fund is a lasting legacy to honor and celebrate Christine's love of, and involvement with children and music.
This year’s competition was held at the Methow Valley United Methodist Church on Friday, April 17th. Volunteer judges Marcy Stamper, Michael Brady and Lisa Peters gathered to listen, watch and evaluate the young musicians on poise, musicality, difficulty, tone and other measures.
15-year-old violinist, Zoie Dubowy, was awarded the $500 first-place award, for her performance of Concerto in A Minor, Op. 3, No. 6, 3rd movement by Vivaldi. Samuel Polson, a 16-year-old cellist, won the second-place $300 award, and Ace Rickabaugh, age 13, won the third-place $100 award for his piece on guitar. Griffin Ellinger received an honorable mention from the judges for his performance on Native American-style flute. All winners are students in the Methow Valley School District.
This year’s other competitors included Sisu Clark, Leah Dominguez, Nils Smith, Wylie Smith, Griffin Ellinger, Azmun Pixie-Plott, and Sokorro Honsinger.
Comments from the judges noted that Zoie’s performance was "technically very strong", that she “tackled a challenging piece and played it beautifully.” They also noted that her “phrasing was particularly good”, and “besides a beautiful vibrato, [hers] was a fun performance with some fast finger-work." Zoie has studied violin since the age of 5, several years of which was with Pam Hunt, learning the Suzuki Method.
As part of the award, Dubowy will perform the winning Vivaldi concerto (with accompanist Jim Ginn on piano) as part of Cascadia Music’s Spring Concert, scheduled for May 8 and 9, at 7 p.m. in the Methow Valley Community Center.
Congratulations Zoie, Samuel and Ace!
GREAT JOB to all the contestants!! Your courage and hard work are commendable!
And finally, THANK YOU to our judges for their impartiality, professionalism and time!
