Rain causes the trash that has accumulated over the winter to migrate toward our storm drains and waterways. Trash can cause blockages in the system, flooding in our neighborhoods, and pollution of nearby water bodies.

Be mindful of where your trash goes and do your part by cleaning blocked storm drains.

Today is Great Lakes Awareness Day. Great Lakes Awareness Day is a day to appreciate the Great Lakes, and advocate for their continued management and protection.

The Great Lakes contain 21% of the world’s fresh drinking water. Only 3% of all water on Earth is freshwater, and of that 3%, only 0.5% is available to us. The rest is locked away in underground aquifers, soils, ice caps, and glaciers, or it is too polluted to drink.

It’s important to be mindful of how we live day-to-day, and how our actions may impact the the Great Lakes now and in the future. Issues like combined sewer overflows, farm runoff, industrial waste, garbage, microplastics, invasive species, and many other pollutants are leading to the contamination of our lakes.

Protecting the Great Lakes as well as providing infrastructure to improve our management of these lakes should be a top priority.
