🌳🍎 Exciting things are growing in Muskegon and Muskegon Heights!
We’re proud to share that TWO new food forests have been installed to help increase access to fresh food, expand tree canopy cover, support native pollinators, and create greener community spaces for everyone to enjoy for years to come.
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make these projects possible:
• Dave Bailey, City of Muskegon Arborist, with BIG thanks for going above and beyond to help bring these food forests to life.
• Rod Denning, our District Forester, for his guidance and support throughout the project.
• Muskegon Public High School students in Matt Johnson’s class for their hard work and enthusiasm.
• Nelson Neighborhood Association for generously providing lunch and snacks for volunteers.
• Samuel Lutheran Church for hosting and supporting the effort.
• Muskegon Family Care employees who volunteered their lunch breaks to support the community garden/food forest collaboration.
Funding for this project was provided through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Grant in partnership with the United States Forest Service. This grant is made possible through funding from the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
This project shows what’s possible when community partners, students, volunteers, and local leaders come together to invest in healthier neighborhoods and a greener future. 🌱
