Spring has arrived in the high desert! Even though it is still getting pretty cold, the cacti are blooming. A lot is going on at the Center. The Satipatthana Course for old students just ended; the first children's one-day course was at the Center last month and was very successful; and the center will offer its first one-day course for old students on April 21; it is expected that one-day courses will be scheduled more regularly.

10-day courses are scheduled approximately every 2 weeks for new students to learn the Vipassana meditation technique and for old students to more firmly establish the technique. These courses fill up fast, so it is important to check for the date the course opens for registration. Be ready to apply at 7:00 am Pacific time on the day registration opens. Feel free to visit the course schedule page for current updates: https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/schedules/schvaddhana

In addition, the annual Trust retreat will be held at the Center May 31 - June 2. This is an excellent opportunity for old students to meet with teachers, meditate together, and see how the center operates. Registration will open on May 1, and there will be the option to attend some sessions virtually.

Fall is here in the high desert, and with some late-summer rains, we have a few blooming flowers! A few updates:
1. Please check the website for updates to our COVID-19 policy. All students and servers are required to test right before coming to the Center, but there are no other testing or vaccine requirements.
2. The West Campus expansion is underway; when the project is complete, we will double our capacity and hopefully reduce the waitlists! Regular updates are provided in the monthly newsletters sent to old students.
3. Old students (those who have sat and completed a 10-day course) are welcome to join us at the Southern California Vipassana Center on Sundays after courses end for group meditation from 9:00 - 10:00 am. Upcoming dates are November 26; December 10; 17; 31.

Students attending the course that began March 1 got an unexpected and rare treat - snowfall at Dhamma Vaddhana. Snow in the desert is always beautiful, especially so at the Center!

A couple of updates:
1. The vaccine requirement has been dropped, so all can apply to sit courses at the Center.
2. Group sittings for old students (those who have completed a 10-day course at a Vipassana Center in the tradition of S.N. Goenka) happen at Dhamma Vaddhana on the last day of the course from 9:00 - 10:00 am. You are welcome to stay to help set up for the next course and have lunch. Upcoming dates are April 2, April 16, and April 30.
3. There are several Children and Teen courses happening this year. Please see the course registration page at https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/schedules/schvaddhana for specific dates.

2023 has been off to a great start with filled courses and many students receiving Dhamma instruction! The cooler temperatures and winter skies make it a great time to be in the high desert.

Here are some activities that might be of interest.

1. SCVC no longer requires students and servers to be vaccinated. Current COVID protocols are listed on the Course Registration page at https://www.dhamma.vaddhana.org/.

2. SCVC hosts one-hour group meditations for old students on Day 11 of the course (typically on a Sunday). Upcoming group meditations are on February 26, March 12, and March 19. There are other locations that offer one-hour group meditation as well. Contact us for more information.

3. The annual Trust retreat will be held March 17-19. This is an important time each year during which the Trust shares accomplishments from the previous year and goals for the future. All old students are welcome to attend, and more information can be found on the SCVC course registration page (registration opens February 17).

May all be happy!

Greetings from Dhamma Vaddhana!

The picture looks north beyond the female server building - we are fortunate to have such beauty when the rains make their way to 29 Palms! There are a couple of updates to highlight.

1. A project manager and other skilled people are needed to support the West Campus Expansion, which will double the current student capacity and add approximately 30,000 square feet of construction that will also include a cell complex. The PM will be the main point of contact for the Development Committee and Trust and the liaison to consultants, contractors, and regulatory officials. For more information, see the PM job description at https://bit.ly/scvc-pm. In addition, the committee is looking for people with other skills, including construction, engineering, regulatory, and others to lend their expertise to the project. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

2. Group Sittings at the Center: The Center hosts one-hour group meditations on Sundays after courses end. The meditation goes from 9:00 – 10:00 am. Old students are welcome to attend. Those who have the time can stay and help get ready for the next course and enjoy lunch. Upcoming dates:
January 2 (Monday for this course only)
January 15
January 29

Looking forward to serving and meditating together at the Center!

The bilingual English-Vietnamese Sati course was just completed over the weekend, and work period servers are busy getting the Center ready for the next course that starts on April 6. SCVC is looking for servers for the work period that runs April 18-20 and for the next 10-day course that begins April 20. Dhamma service is a wonderful way to strengthen one's practice and offers the opportunity to meet and get to know others on the Dhamma path. Servers during work periods and courses participate in 3 group meditations each day, and course servers have access to the Assistant Teachers for guidance. If you are interested in serving at the Center, please visit the scheduling page at https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/schedules/schvaddhana.

Over 60 students attended the Trust retreat March 4 – 6; this was the first in-person Trust Retreat since 2019. Participants participated in a campus tour to view the enhanced landscaping, the results of the East Campus Renovation Project, and a viewing of the part of the campus that will contain the West Campus Development. During the first day, each of the committees of the Trust presented a summary of its accomplishments since the last retreat and plans for the future. At the Trust meeting on Sunday, the new Trust was installed. The trust meetings are a wonderful way to engage with the Center and keep updated on current and future operations. They are open to all old students who can attend in person or virtually. In addition, there has been significant energy as committees are being revitalized and expanding membership. If there is a committee that interests you, please reach out to [email protected].

Service Needs: The Center needs between-course servers for the work periods that begin April 4 and April 18. There are still openings for servers for the 10-day courses that start April 6 and April 20. If you are interested in applying, please visit the course registration page at https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/schedules/schvaddhana.
