As spring turns into summer, temperatures in Joshua Tree National Park can rise quickly, and even a short visit can become more challenging than expected.
Before heading into the park, take time to plan ahead. Joshua Tree is a remote desert environment with limited shade, little to no cell service, and no food, water, or gas available inside the park.
A few things to keep in mind:
☀️ Check the full forecast. Look beyond the high temperature. Wind, humidity, UV index, and heat advisories can all affect how conditions feel once you are outside.
🥾 Choose a realistic itinerary. Plan hikes and activities that match your ability level, the time of day, and current weather conditions. Build in breaks, bring more water than you think you’ll need, and have a backup plan if conditions change.
📱 Use official sources. Check the NPS website and download the NPS App before your visit. Third-party information can sometimes be outdated or confusing, especially for first-time visitors.
🗺️ Stop by a visitor center. JTNPA information specialists and park staff can help you review your plans, pick up a map, and prepare for current conditions before entering the park.
Planning ahead can make all the difference. Stay safe, take it slow, and help make your visit to Joshua Tree National Park a good one.
