Amazingly, under current Twentynine Palms regulations it’s legal for the same CEQA consultant, Nicole Criste of Terra Nova, to act as the advisor for the developer and for the City. But is it ethical?

Twentynine Palms has a regulation that prevents this apparent conflict of interest when advising on hazardous waste projects “The person, or entity, preparing the documents required by the California Environmental Quality Act shall not be the same person, or entity, which acts as a consultant to the Local Assessment Committee.”

Should Twentynine Palms have a similar rule in place for projects like Ofland where multiple entitlements (zoning changes, development code amendments) are needed to approve a project?

Yep, should be kicked back to the Planning Commission.

VIa The Desert Trumpet
Tonight (Tuesday, 4/22) the 29 Palms City Council will take yet another look at commercial campgrounds and RV parks on land zoned Rural Living in Twentynine Palms.

A five-acre campground could potentially have 75 campsites. The code requires three trash enclosures for five acres plus an undetermined number of restrooms or toilet facility. There is no stipulation regarding fire rings or grills, no regulations about pets, no requirements to maintain dirt roads or provide environmental protections.

With our understaffed and overtaxed Code Compliance office, campgrounds might quickly turn into fetid, trashy burn zones that will blight our desert lands.

You ok with this?

The Desert Trumpet photo and video album from Morongo Basin's contribution to nationwide dissent on Saturday, April 5.

Morongo Basin residents showed their disapproval with the direction of the federal government as led by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk on Saturday, April 5. An estimated 250 people lined the four corners at Hwy 62 and Park Blvd. to join a nationwide “Hands Off” protest called by a coalition of more than 150 organizations including Indivisible, 50501 and locally, Morongo Basin Resistance. At least 1,600 protests took place across the country, with 100,000 people reported as gathering on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
