This was my reply to one gentleman's comment that the fire was probably started by a cigarette butt tossed from a car window. Needless to say I want to buy him dinner but at the very least I will thank him with this reply in support of his comment:
You can repeat that a couple of million times and you still wouldn't scratch the surface. Ci******es cause a whole lot more than death to smokers. The butts are toxic with all the chemicals and toxins in the smoke only concentrated in that little filter that is not biodegradable and over 3 TRILLION are tossed to the ground every year. Most of them still burning and many causing wild fires. All of them poisoning any water or life they contact. And if you really want to get mad at the irresponsibility of many (but not all) smokers (of which I was one for 31 years until 2005), the ash that gets flicked out of car windows in front of you and onto sidewalks you and your family, friends, and barefoot pets walk on, is also toxic and can cause lung cancer if inhaled or any kind of cancer if absorbed into the body (I.E. flip flops, sandals, barefoot/paws). There is no part of a burned cigarette that is not toxic and does not pose a health threat. As this moment every single street, freeway, park, sidewalk, national monuments (the shameful list is so long it would take several pages), beach, playground, and parking lot in America is full of toxic butts. I have had the same standing challenge in place for years: Show me one parking lot anywhere in the U.S. that does not have a single butt somewhere on it and I will pay you $50. I would not drive without my AC on even though the only real filter that can clean the air of the ash particles being bombarded at you every time you are on the road is your lungs. Mad yet? Keep in mind that Lung Cancer is one of the top causes of death in the U.S. and globally. I support a smokers right to smoke but any right comes with responsibilities which include not using the planet and all of it's inhabitants (human and non-human) as an ashtray. Ever since the filter was attached to the cigarette around 1955 it seemed to have a note attached that said, "please throw me down where ever you happen to be standing or out any available open window" because a very large percentage of humans (irregardless of race, gender, s*x, or any other way that we try to differentiate ourselves from one another which is another human farce and foible) smoke their ci******es and discard the ashes, butts, packaging, and smoke anywhere they happen to be no matter where that may be and who may be around. This grouchy old Marine has dressed down people of every age in person about this and the answer is always one of innocence, like it is perfectly OK to do because everyone else does it. Well let me be the first to tell them they are wrong. And people, pets, and our planet are being hurt and worse as a result. And until more people like Jerome speak up and say enough is enough, smoke 'em if you got 'em but please do it responsibly or quit (better yet but just an option :-)). A 3-acre brush fire erupted near the 5 Freeway in Santa Clarita Wednesday afternoon. A mobile home park was being evacuated, and the northbound 5 was closed just north of SR-14.
