Not millions, not billions, but trillions of cigarette butts are carelessly, ignorantly, and stubbornly tossed on the ground annually. Each butt has enough toxins to poison 1-2 gallons of water.

There are many more non-smokers than smokers yet we, our children, our animals, and our planet which is two thirds water are all abused by the small yet very stubborn percentage of those who refuse to act responsibly.

I started the California NPO No More Butts Foundation in 2010 to address this very issue.

Hey smokers! How about not using our whole planet as your personal ashtray?!?!

When we hear "ocean pollution", we think of straws, bottles, and other plastic trash but cigarette filters are a far more harmful form of waste.

California is under EXTREME Red Flag warning due to winds gusting up to 80 MPH.

This is no time to toss lit ci******es out of car windows but it is happening all over the state right now!

C'mon smokers!?!? How about thinking before but tossing a 1200 degree cigarette on the ground?

Three trillion cigarette butts are carelessly tossed from human hands every year. Yes I said "trillion". And each butt is toxic with the ability to contaminate at least two gallons of water. Six trillion gallons of contaminated water could be the end result if all wind up in rivers, lakes, streams, ground water, and all lead to the ocean. Ignorant and uncaring smokers literally poisoning the planet to support their smoking habit. And you better hope not to be behind a smoker using their car window as an ashtray or because that means you and anyone or any living thing with lungs in your car are breathing toxic cigarette ash which also causes lung cancer. 40+ million Americans still smoke ci******es with the vast majority tossing their ashes and butts everywhere they go spreading toxins, poison, and cancer on innocent victims 24/7/365.

When we hear "ocean pollution", we think of straws, bottles, and other plastic trash but cigarette filters are a far more harmful form of waste.

Fact. No time to waste. Our planet's health as well as our own is at risk. Tell any smokers you know to stop sickening us with their ashes and butts that they flick and toss anywhere they are. Look down anywhere, parks, beaches, schools, national monuments, cemeteries, beaches, every parking lot on the planet, and of course using our lungs as air filters for the lung cancer causing ashes they flick out of their car windows on all the unsuspecting victims behind them. Disgusting and shameful behavior.

When we hear "ocean pollution", we think of straws, bottles, and other plastic trash but cigarette filters are a far more harmful form of waste.

Not even lava flows can cover all the human waste tossed on the ground on the Big Island. Cigarette butts everywhere including some of the most pristine and beautiful places on Earth. Some humans do not deserve to live in or visit such a paradise. Prayers to all our brothers and sisters now living with the wrath of Kilauea. Perhaps the constant onslaught of humans trashing her island are bringing out her anger.

60-80 MPH gusts all over California and yet smokers continue to toss lit butts out of their car windows, sidewalks, etc. etc. Never mind the toxins in the butts for just a moment, each lit butt his a cherry attached of 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. Enough to start say a small wildfire perhaps? That turn into big fires! Shame on all smokers who use their automobile windows as ashtrays.

And don't forget that cigarette ash causes lung cancer in the victims in the cars behind smokers using them as ashtrays (I.E. out the window and onto your car and into your lungs. Children, adults, pets, anyone in that car is exposed.
This kind of littering is not only immoral and illegal, it is lethal!

Please, if you smoke, do so responsibly. Want to quit? I am helping for free, just message me.

I am very pleased to report that the Guanacaste Province in Costa Rica is one of the most butt-free places I have been in quite a while. It is also a fact that percentage-wise, compared to other nations, less Costa Ricans smoke ci******es including the United States which is currently between 12-15% (45-50 million Americans smoke ci******es and 1,700 teenagers start every day).

The butts I did find were mostly where American tourists are common in the main drags of the small towns and villages, and most had American brand names. Another example of shameful Americans bringing pollution and toxic waste to toss on unsuspecting indigenous populations and poison the ground and groundwater in foreign countries.

But the bottom line is that Costa Rica is gorgeous! Ticos are some of the nicest people you will ever meet! And the country is stunningly beautiful with wildlife everywhere, beaches on both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and some of the longest living people on the planet! Can't beat that!

Let's all remember that when visiting another country we need to be extra careful to leave things exactly as we find them with nothing left behind except good memories that can be cherished. And the only shooting of any animal should be with a camera!

They beat up a lifeguard so they could smoke their ci******es where they were not supposed to smoke in the first place??? This is my chance to rant about something I know extremely well, the careless irresponsibility and complete stupidity of some cigarette smokers. Having been one for over 30 years I know particularly well the attitude most smokers adopt when someone confronts them about their smoking. They don't just get defensive, they get offensive. The careless irresponsibility begins with their total disregard for the toxic litter and refuse created by their habit. The smoke is poison yet they blow it in non-smokers faces and smoke around non-smokers all the time, the ash is toxic because it contains all of the poisons found in the smoke as well as being a fine particulate irritant to the lungs yet every single person who rides in a car is exposed to breathing this ash every single day because of the estimated 25,000,000 smokers using their cars windows (and therefore everyone and everything behind them) as ashtrays, and we know that the butts are toxic as well as non-biodegradable yet they are tossed to the ground in the TRILLIONS (estimated between 3 and 4 trillion annually worldwide) and each one can literally poison 1-2 gallons of water. But like the 800 lb. gorilla in the middle of the living room that everyone is pretending isn't there, they will continue to help cause over 200,000 lung cancer deaths in America every year in poor innocent victims who never even touched a cigarette but had the misfortune to be exposed to the 2nd hand smoke, or the ash from a driver in front of them, or stepping on a wet cigarette butt at the beach or in the park, all of which could have exposed them to lung cancer, skin cancer, or any other disease related to toxic poisoning. Until we put our foot down as a nation and as a planet that we will no longer accept people screaming for their rights (smoking is a right) but who are unwilling to do it responsibly. These idiots who attacked this lifeguard are prime examples of pervasively poor attitude of smokers. And people who have never smoked will continue to get sick and die because of them. And let's not forget about the fires caused by tossed ci******es as well, but that's another rant.
Please share this story of these irresponsible cigarette smoking morons and lets hope they get locked up for a long time. And bless the people who stepped in to help the lifeguard. Without their help that stupid girl would have kept kicking him in the head and he could have been badly hurt or worse. If we don't stand up to these kinds of idiots and for each other then they will just continue this kind of bad behavior. Smokers, take notice, smoke if you must but you better do it responsibly. No smoking around anyone else's lungs, no ash on the ground or out of car windows, and no butts are ever thrown on the ground. I don't think this is too much to ask to protect our loved ones and the innocent who do not need to get sick or die because you want to smoke. Please share this with EVERYONE and let's make sure we get everyone to care. Bradley Fischl and the Pushing Double Nickels Coalition.

A lifeguard whose attack by three people in Venice was captured on video had simply asked his assailants to stop smoking on the pier, one of the lifeguard’s supervisors said Friday.

This was my reply to one gentleman's comment that the fire was probably started by a cigarette butt tossed from a car window. Needless to say I want to buy him dinner but at the very least I will thank him with this reply in support of his comment:

You can repeat that a couple of million times and you still wouldn't scratch the surface. Ci******es cause a whole lot more than death to smokers. The butts are toxic with all the chemicals and toxins in the smoke only concentrated in that little filter that is not biodegradable and over 3 TRILLION are tossed to the ground every year. Most of them still burning and many causing wild fires. All of them poisoning any water or life they contact. And if you really want to get mad at the irresponsibility of many (but not all) smokers (of which I was one for 31 years until 2005), the ash that gets flicked out of car windows in front of you and onto sidewalks you and your family, friends, and barefoot pets walk on, is also toxic and can cause lung cancer if inhaled or any kind of cancer if absorbed into the body (I.E. flip flops, sandals, barefoot/paws). There is no part of a burned cigarette that is not toxic and does not pose a health threat. As this moment every single street, freeway, park, sidewalk, national monuments (the shameful list is so long it would take several pages), beach, playground, and parking lot in America is full of toxic butts. I have had the same standing challenge in place for years: Show me one parking lot anywhere in the U.S. that does not have a single butt somewhere on it and I will pay you $50. I would not drive without my AC on even though the only real filter that can clean the air of the ash particles being bombarded at you every time you are on the road is your lungs. Mad yet? Keep in mind that Lung Cancer is one of the top causes of death in the U.S. and globally. I support a smokers right to smoke but any right comes with responsibilities which include not using the planet and all of it's inhabitants (human and non-human) as an ashtray. Ever since the filter was attached to the cigarette around 1955 it seemed to have a note attached that said, "please throw me down where ever you happen to be standing or out any available open window" because a very large percentage of humans (irregardless of race, gender, s*x, or any other way that we try to differentiate ourselves from one another which is another human farce and foible) smoke their ci******es and discard the ashes, butts, packaging, and smoke anywhere they happen to be no matter where that may be and who may be around. This grouchy old Marine has dressed down people of every age in person about this and the answer is always one of innocence, like it is perfectly OK to do because everyone else does it. Well let me be the first to tell them they are wrong. And people, pets, and our planet are being hurt and worse as a result. And until more people like Jerome speak up and say enough is enough, smoke 'em if you got 'em but please do it responsibly or quit (better yet but just an option :-)).
