We were deeply honored to host Miss Alabama Volunteer 2027, Zoie McGuyer, as our guest speaker at the recent Colbert County Children’s Policy Council (CPC) quarterly meeting.

It was a privilege to hear her speak about her dedicated advocacy for children who have experienced abuse throughout Colbert County and the state of Alabama. Zoie’s commitment to this cause is especially meaningful, as she bravely draws upon her own childhood experiences to offer hope and healing to others. Her journey from personal adversity to becoming a powerful advocate for the vulnerable is truly inspiring.

Thank you, Zoie, for your time, your vulnerability, and the incredible work you are doing for our children.

My husband said the other night that he was so ready for these coughs to be over. I looked at him and asked if he was prepared to wait until May.

In all seriousness, welcome back to school! Everyone’s got a runny nose and a cough. This is normal. Let me repeat - this is normal. It happens every year. Kids haven’t been around each other in over two months, and now we’ve got 20 new kids all in a classroom together. There’s no way to stop the spread of germs.

As a reminder, these things are almost always viral. Antibiotics rarely help, unless it’s been going on for quite a while. Your kid is strong! Their immune system can do the fighting. In the meantime, invest in some Kleenex and ear plugs.

We were told smartphones would connect our kids and keep them safe.

But they’ve stolen play, focus, boredom, connection, safety – all things children need to thrive.

It doesn’t have to be this way.
Choose wild over wired.
