A.J. Tomlinson recorded in his journal on June 13, 1903, “I was ordained a minister of the gospel of the Holiness Church at Camp Creek, N.C.” He later led the Holiness Churches to adopt the name Church of God. After relocating to Cleveland, Tennessee, in 1904, he went on to moderate the first and several subsequent General Assemblies, plant and pastor the North Cleveland Church of God, become the first general overseer, edit the "Church of God Evangel," serve as the first superintendent (president) of today’s Lee University, and serve as the first superintendent of today’s Smoky Mountain Children’s Home. His legacy includes several denominations identifying themselves with some form of the name Church of God and ministering to well over ten million members around the world.
