🌎💚 Today is World Mental Health Day.

Today, people around the world are coming together to raise awareness and advocate for mental health care.

NAMI reminds us that this is an opportunity to break the silence around mental health, share our stories, advocate for change, and work toward quality mental health care for everyone.

Here in Tuscaloosa, we're doing our part one conversation, one support group, one educational program, one family, and one connection at a time.

Mental health is health.
People deserve dignity.
Families deserve support.

And no one should have to navigate mental illness alone.

đź’š Together, we can build a more compassionate community.

🧠 Stigma is a barrier to asking for help.

It can sound like:

“Just get over it.”
“Everyone gets anxious.”
“You don't look depressed.”
“They're crazy.”

Or even silence because someone is afraid of how others will react if they talk about their mental health.

During Mental Illness Awareness Week, we can each do something about that.
Listen.
Learn.
Choose our words carefully.
Challenge stereotypes when we hear them.

And make it clear to the people in our lives that struggling with mental health is nothing to be ashamed of.

💚 Let's build a community where asking for help is met with support—not judgment.

đź’š Mental illness affects families, too.

Behind many people living with mental health conditions are parents, spouses, siblings, children, friends, and caregivers trying to understand how best to help.
They may experience fear, confusion, exhaustion, grief, hope—and sometimes all of those things at once.

They need information.
They need support.
And they need people who understand, too.

During Mental Illness Awareness Week, we're reminding families in Tuscaloosa:
NAMI is here for you, too.

Supporting the mental health of our community means supporting individuals and the people who love them.

đź’š A diagnosis is something a person has. It isn't everything a person is.

Someone living with schizophrenia is still a parent, child, friend, coworker, neighbor, artist, sports fan, dog lover, musician—or a hundred other things.

The same is true for someone living with bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, or any other mental health condition.

During Mental Illness Awareness Week, let's challenge ourselves to notice the language we use.

See the person before the diagnosis.

Respect their experiences without defining them by their most difficult moments.

That's one way each of us can help reduce stigma.

đź’š Community can be part of recovery.

During Mental Illness Awareness Week, we're highlighting something at the heart of NAMI's mission: connection.

NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group brings adults living with mental health conditions together with people who understand through their own lived experience.

No judgment. No need to explain everything. No expectation that you have it all figured out.

Just a safe place for peer support and connection.

đź’š Mental Illness Awareness Week starts TODAY.

Mental health affects all of us—whether we personally live with a mental health condition or love, work with, care for, or support someone who does.

This week is about more than awareness.

It's about understanding instead of judgment.

It's about connection instead of isolation.

It's about support instead of silence.

And it's about creating communities where people feel safe asking for help.

NAMI's theme this year is “Building Community: Supporting Mental Well-being Together.”

Here in Tuscaloosa, that's exactly what we want to continue building.

đź’š There is a place for you in this community.

đź’š Tomorrow begins Mental Illness Awareness Week.

Since 1990, the first full week of October has been recognized as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) following advocacy by NAMI. It is a time to raise awareness, challenge stigma, educate our communities, and support people affected by mental illness.

This year, NAMI is focusing on the power of community and connection—because no one should have to navigate mental health challenges alone.

Throughout the coming week, NAMI Tuscaloosa will be sharing information, resources, and ways all of us can help build a community that better understands and supports mental health.

💚 Mental Illness Awareness Week: October 5–11

Join us this week. Learn something. Share something. Start a conversation.

đź’š You don't need to have the perfect words to support someone.

Sometimes we hesitate to reach out because we're afraid we'll say the wrong thing.

Try something simple:
“I've noticed you haven't seemed like yourself lately.”
“I'm here if you want to talk.”
“You don't have to explain everything to me.”
“Would it help if I just sat with you?”
“How can I support you right now?”

You don't have to diagnose.
You don't have to fix.
You can listen.

Sometimes showing someone they don't have to carry everything alone is a powerful place to start.

10/02/2026

đź’š Mental illness doesn't always look the way you expect it to.

Someone can go to work every day and struggle.

Someone can laugh with friends and struggle.

Someone can be a parent, student, professional, caregiver, athlete, neighbor—or the person everyone else depends on—and still struggle with their mental health.

We can't always see what another person is carrying.

That's one reason reducing mental health stigma matters.

Instead of asking, “What's wrong with you?”

Let's create a community more willing to ask:

“What are you going through, and how can I support you?”

🧠 New month. Same mission.

At NAMI Tuscaloosa, our work isn't limited to one awareness month or one diagnosis.

Mental health touches every part of our community—our families, workplaces, schools, friendships, and neighborhoods.

Throughout October, we'll continue talking about mental health conditions, recovery, stigma, family support, treatment, and the resources available right here in our community.

Because mental health deserves to be talked about all year long.

đź’š Education changes understanding.
đź’š Support creates connection.
đź’š Advocacy creates change.
