Family Counseling Service Tuscaloosa

Family Counseling Service Tuscaloosa Family Counseling Service is a non-profit agency providing professional counseling for individuals, Counseling often involves the family, as well.

The goal of Family Counseling Service is to make professional counseling services accessible to everyone, regardless of income. Those who come for counseling are typically well-functioning people who are experiencing some sort of life crisis. This may be the death of a loved one, a divorce, parenting issues, blended family problems, family stressors or other situations that have drained their ment

al and emotional ability to manage. Family Counseling also offers free counseling to school students who are suffering from an emotional crisis at home and, as a result, are experiencing problems at school. Since 2008, FCS has conducted over 1,000 free counseling sessions for these students! The results have been a full letter grade improvement in academic performance and a drastic reduction in days absent. In conjunction with this, the agency provides free counseling at Davis-Emerson Middle School, which has a high rate of students from low-income families. This is also one of the areas most affected by the 2011 tornado. Counseling deals with many mental, emotional and social needs that extend beyond what the School’s staff can address. Last school year, the agency provided 145 individual and group counseling sessions at Davis-Emerson. The agency also offers free adolescent programs targeting at-risk youth. These programs help equip teens with the skills and opportunity to choose a new path of action. By empowering them to resist negative peer pressure, understand the long-term consequences of their behavior and recognize healthy boundaries for themselves and others, they become better able to make decisions that will enhance their own lives and those around them. These services also involve the parents of the adolescents so that they can develop improved skills in parenting, decision making, discipline, and changing the home environment to achieve better results.

Sunday is a good time to check in with yourself before the week begins. 💚

Ask yourself: What do I need more of this week—rest, support, movement, connection, or simply a little more grace?

Small choices can make a meaningful difference in your mental and emotional wellness.

After a busy week, it can be tempting to use the weekend to catch up on everything you didn’t get done. But rest, connection, and quiet time are productive in their own way, too.

This weekend, give yourself permission to:

• Put down the to-do list for a little while
• Spend time with someone who makes you feel supported
• Get outside or take a short walk
• Say no to something that is draining you
• Do something simply because you enjoy it
• Rest without feeling like you have to “earn” it

Mental wellness is built through small, consistent choices, not perfection. What’s one small thing you can do for yourself this weekend? 💙

A new week can bring a long list of responsibilities, expectations, and worries.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember: you do not have to solve everything at once.

Sometimes caring for your mental health looks like taking one task at a time. Sometimes it means setting a boundary, asking for help, taking a break, or simply acknowledging that you’re carrying a lot right now.

Try asking yourself:

💭 What truly needs my attention today?
💭 What can wait until tomorrow?
💭 Is there something I can ask someone else to help with?
💭 What would make today feel just a little more manageable?

Small changes can help reduce stress before it begins to feel unmanageable.

And when stress, anxiety, relationship difficulties, grief, or other challenges begin interfering with everyday life, professional support can help.

Family Counseling Service has served individuals and families throughout West Alabama since 1964 with accessible, expert counseling tailored to each person’s unique needs and goals.

August is National Wellness Month! 💚

Wellness isn’t about having a perfect routine or always feeling your best. It’s about making small, consistent choices that support your mental, emotional, and physical well-being over time.

This month, challenge yourself to focus on one healthy habit at a time.

✨ Check in with your emotions instead of pushing them aside.
✨ Make time for movement—even if it’s just a short walk around the block.
✨ Stay connected with the people who encourage and support you.
✨ Extend yourself the same kindness and patience you would offer a friend.

Remember, it’s okay to have difficult days. Caring for your mental health doesn’t mean you never struggle, it means you’re willing to take steps toward healing and ask for support when you need it.

At Family Counseling Service, we believe everyone deserves access to compassionate, expert care. Since 1964, we’ve been helping individuals, couples, adolescents, and families throughout West Alabama navigate life’s challenges and build healthier, more fulfilling lives.

If you or someone you love could benefit from counseling, we’re here to help.

As a new school year begins, it’s normal for both children and parents to experience a mix of excitement, nervousness, and uncertainty. A little preparation and a lot of patience can go a long way in helping everyone adjust.

📚 Back-to-School Tips for Families:
• Start easing back into school routines, including bedtime and morning schedules.
• Make time each day to ask open-ended questions like, “What was the best part of your day?” or “What was something that felt challenging?”
• Remember that big emotions are normal during times of transition. Listen first, then problem-solve together.
• Keep expectations realistic. It often takes a few weeks for new routines to feel comfortable.
• Don’t forget to take care of yourself, too. Children often feel more secure when the adults around them are managing stress in healthy ways.

If your child, or anyone in your family, is struggling with anxiety, stress, grief, or other life challenges, you don’t have to face it alone. Family Counseling Service has been serving West Alabama since 1964 by providing accessible, expert counseling for children, adolescents, adults, and families.

💙🌎 Happy International Day of Friendship!

Friendship is one of life’s greatest gifts.

A good friend celebrates your victories, stands beside you through life’s challenges, listens without judgment, and reminds you that you never have to face difficult times alone.

Healthy friendships don’t just make us smile—they can also improve our emotional well-being, reduce stress, and help us feel more connected to the world around us.

Today, take a moment to let someone know how much they mean to you.

📱 Send a text.📞 Make a phone call.☕ Invite them to coffee.💙 Simply say, “I’m grateful for you.”

Those few words might mean more than you realize.

✨ We’d love to hear from you!

Tag a friend who has made a difference in your life, or tell us in the comments what qualities you value most in a great friend.

Together, let’s celebrate the relationships that remind us we’re never alone.

💙Happy Parent Appreciation Day!💙

Today, we celebrate the incredible people who love, guide, encourage, and show up for their children every single day.

To the moms, dads, grandparents, foster parents, adoptive parents, stepparents, guardians, and every caregiver who pours their heart into raising a child…

Thank you.

Parenting isn’t about being perfect.

It’s about showing up.Trying again after a hard day.Offering hugs after mistakes.Listening when it’s easier to lecture. And loving your children through every season of life.

Some days are filled with laughter. Some days are filled with challenges. Most days are a little bit of both.

If no one has told you lately…

💙 You’re making a difference.
💙 Your love matters.
💙 Your presence matters.
💙 And the work you’re doing today is helping shape tomorrow.

At Family Counseling Services, we’re honored to walk alongside families through life’s ups and downs. Remember, asking for support is a sign of strength—not weakness.

❤️ Help us celebrate today!

Tell us about a parent, grandparent, or caregiver who made a lasting impact on your life. Tag them or share a favorite memory in the comments.

🍦❤️ Happy National Ice Cream Day!

Life can be busy. Schedules fill up. Responsibilities pile on.

But today is the perfect reminder to slow down and enjoy one of life’s simple pleasures.

Whether it’s a trip to your favorite local ice cream shop, making sundaes at home, or sharing a cone with someone you love, those little moments together often become the memories we treasure most.

Sometimes self-care doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sometimes it looks like laughter.
Sometimes it looks like family.
Sometimes it looks like two scoops… with sprinkles. 🍨✨

🍦 Now for the important question…
What’s your all-time favorite ice cream flavor?

🍫 Chocolate?
🍓 Strawberry?
🍦 Vanilla?
🥜 Butter Pecan?
🍪 Cookies & Cream?
🤔 Or something totally different?

Tell us in the comments—we’re always looking for our next favorite flavor!

Wishing you a day filled with sweet treats, meaningful moments, and smiles that last long after the last bite.

😊🌎 Happy World Emoji Day!

Sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest difference.

A ❤️ can remind someone they’re loved.
A 🤗 can offer comfort.
A 👏 can celebrate a victory.
A 🌈 can bring hope.
A 😊 can brighten someone’s day.

While emojis can never replace a real conversation, they can be a simple way to let someone know you’re thinking about them.

Today, take a moment to check in with someone you care about. Send a text. Make a phone call. Share an encouraging message. Sometimes reaching out (even with a simple emoji) is the first step toward helping someone feel seen, supported, and connected.

💬 Let’s have some fun!

If you could only use ONE emoji to describe your day today… what would it be?
