Today, October 16, 2026, Mu Eta Eta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated proudly joins our sisterhood and brotherhood in celebrating 94 years of Service for Humanity!

On October 16, 1932, at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., Aliene Carrington Ewell, RN, and eleven fellow nurses established Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated. Together, these twelve extraordinary women, affectionately known as the Illustrious Jewels, laid the foundation for a legacy of nursing excellence, scholarship, leadership, sisterhood, and service.

Their vision was greater than themselves. They created a sisterhood dedicated to elevating the nursing profession, mentoring future nurses, promoting health in our communities, and serving humanity with compassion and purpose. Nearly a century later, their legacy continues to shine through generations of nurses and leaders committed to making a difference.

As the Mu Eta Eta Chapter, established in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 2024, we are honored to carry this legacy forward. We stand on the shoulders of twelve visionary women whose courage, commitment, and determination continue to inspire us.

Today, we celebrate our founders, honor our history, and recommit ourselves to the principles that unite us.

You never know what someone may be carrying beneath the surface. A kind word, a listening ear, a simple “How are you really doing?” or an offer of support may mean more than you realize.

Let us continue to lead with compassion, extend grace to ourselves and others, and create communities where mental health is discussed openly and treated with the same importance as physical health.

Your mental health matters. Your story matters. You matter. 💚💛🐢

Breast health awareness is about recognizing changes early and seeking timely evaluation—not assuming that every change means cancer. This is especially important for Black women, whose breast cancer outcomes are disproportionately affected by disparities in diagnosis and treatment.

Eight breast changes to watch for

* New lump or thickening in the breast or armpit, even if painless.
* New ni**le inversion or a ni**le that begins turning inward.
* Dimpling or puckering of the breast skin.
* Orange-peel texture — thickened, swollen skin with small pits.
* Swelling or color changes, including redness, warmth, or purple or darker discoloration on darker skin.
* Unusual ni**le discharge, especially spontaneous, one-sided, clear, or bloody discharge.
* Persistent ni**le rash or sore that does not heal.
* Changes in breast size or shape, including swelling near the collarbone.

Key takeaways

* Know your normal: Become familiar with how your breasts usually look and feel.
* Act on new changes: Have new or unusual breast changes evaluated promptly. Most breast changes are not cancer, but they should not be ignored.
* Do not delay screening: Follow recommended mammogram schedules and discuss your personal screening needs with your healthcare provider.
* Seek urgent evaluation for rapid changes: Rapid swelling, warmth, or skin changes warrant urgent medical assessment.

Election Day will be here before we know it. The most important thing you can do right now is make a plan to vote and help your family, friends, and community do the same. Whether you’re voting early, voting by mail, or voting on Election Day on November 3rd, having a plan can help ensure you are prepared and ready to make your voice heard.

The NAACP has created two free toolkits to help you get ready:

We the People: Vote Toolkit - Access ready-to-use graphics, sample social media posts, and messaging to encourage voter participation in your community.

We the People: Election Protection Toolkit- Get resources that walk voters through every step of the voting journey and explain what to do if you experience problems at the polls.

If you or someone you know experiences problems voting, call 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) for help.

Voter Guides (not all states included) - Request your free printed nonpartisan voter guide.

All resources can be found and downloaded on https://naacp.org/vote.

🎀 Breast Cancer: Know the Numbers

1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer during her lifetime.

321,910 new cases of invasive breast cancer are estimated among U.S. women in 2026.

42,140 women are estimated to die from breast cancer in 2026.

💗 A disparity we must talk about

Black women are about 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than White women, despite having a slightly lower overall incidence rate. Multiple factors contribute, including later-stage diagnosis, differences in treatment, access to care, and tumor characteristics.

Triple-negative breast cancer accounts for about 15% of breast cancers and is more common and often diagnosed at a younger age in Black women.

🩺 Screening matters

For women 40–74 who are at average risk, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a mammogram every 2 years. Women at higher risk may need a different screening plan, so discussing personal and family history with a healthcare professional is important.

Mu Eta Eta Chapter stands together in awareness, walk together in hope, and serve together for humanity.
