Phi Eta Sigma

Phi Eta Sigma Phi Eta Sigma is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students in all disciplines

* Founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois, Phi Eta Sigma is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students in all disciplines.
* Inspired by the past and dedicated to the future, the Society’s mission is to encourage and reward academic excellence among freshmen in institutions of higher learning.
* The three Greek words appearing on our

crest form the motto of the organization: "Knowledge is Power."
* Those elected to membership include those who have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at the end of any first year, full-time curricular period, provided they have carried a normal academic load acceptable toward a bachelor’s degree and rank in the upper 20 percent of their class.
* Since its founding, more than 1,100,000 scholars have been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma.
* Phi Eta Sigma chapters are chartered on 365 campuses across the United States.
* Hundreds of college and university faculty and staff volunteers share their time to serve as advisers to local chapters.
* Approximately $285,000 in scholarships is awarded annually by the national organization, and many additional thousands are awarded by local chapters.
* An important strength of Phi Eta Sigma is its form of government. It is governed by a Constitution and Laws generated by student delegates attending national conventions. At the biennial conventions, student delegates also elect the national officers and Executive Committee members.
* Phi Eta Sigma conducts a biennial national convention with attendee expenses, excluding transportation, paid by the national office for a chapter adviser and student delegate from each chapter.

🌍✨ Where in the World is Phi Eta Sigma?

Our first stop takes us to Florida, where Phi Eta Sigma member Kimberly Ali is spending her summer making a difference through service.

From organizing book drives to volunteering at community events, Kimberly is giving back while embracing plenty of fun "side quests" along the way. It's a great reminder that summer growth isn't just about where you go - it's about the impact you make wherever you are.

Thank you, Kimberly, for sharing how you're elevating your summer through service and community! 💛

🌟 Board Member Spotlight: Elizabeth Cordero

Meet Elizabeth Cordero, Phi Eta Sigma's Student Representative on the National Board and a rising senior at Florida State University!

Since joining Phi Eta Sigma in 2024, Elizabeth has served as both Vice President and two-term President of her chapter while helping represent members at the national level. She is passionate about expanding opportunities and increasing accessibility for students across the Society.

💛 Her advice to members: ""Take advantage of the holistic resources Phi Eta Sigma provides! Attend national events, apply for scholarships, and pursue leadership opportunities at both the local and national levels.""

🌟 The future of Phi Eta Sigma starts here.

We're excited to introduce two new national initiatives designed to make the Phi Eta Sigma experience more accessible, engaging, and impactful than ever before.

Elevate Forward is our new signature national experience - a weeklong virtual event that brings together members from across the country for leadership development, career preparation, networking, recognition, and more. Best of all, it's completely free for students and chapters.

The XXIII Leadership Institute is Phi Eta Sigma's premier leadership experience. Each year, just 23 outstanding students will be selected as Leadership Fellows to participate in an immersive program focused on leadership, purpose, professional growth, and building lifelong connections.

Both opportunities reflect our continued commitment to helping members elevate with honor while creating meaningful experiences that prepare students for success far beyond the classroom.

📅 Registration and applications for both programs open September 8.

This is only the beginning. Stay tuned as we share more about each experience in the weeks ahead.

🌟 Board Member Spotlight: Tony Kemp

For more than two decades, Tony Kemp has helped shape the Phi Eta Sigma experience through his service as a chapter advisor, national board member, and Advisor Representative.

Tony's favorite part of serving the Society is celebrating students' academic achievements alongside their families and helping create meaningful experiences that recognize their hard work and dedication.

His advice:
💛 "Continue to be the best 'you' possible and enjoy lifelong learning!"

Tony is especially excited for several new initiatives the Society will be sharing soon - stay tuned!

🌟 Board Member Spotlight: Nicole Zellers

Nicole Zellers has spent nearly a decade giving back to Phi Eta Sigma, first as a student member and now as an Alumni Representative on the National Board.

As a Chief Biomedical Engineer, Nicole is passionate about helping members build meaningful relationships and encouraging students to step outside their comfort zones - because that's often where the greatest growth happens.

Her advice:
💛 "Step outside of your comfort zone and do the scary thing."

Fun fact: Nicole learned how to sail while working at a summer camp during college!
