The Stepping Up Initiative in Tuscaloosa Alabama

Stepping Up is a national initiative striving to reduce the number of people with serious mental illness in jails by means of collaboration among local governments, sheriffs, judges, mental health treatment and health care providers, local residents, and other community stakeholders.

A serious mental illness is a severe and disabling condition which impairs behaviors, thoughts, and/or emotions. Without treatment, serious mental illness can interfere with a person’s ability to function independently, maintain relationships, maintain personal safety, etc.

Indian Rivers Behavioral Health is proud to have been chosen to organize an action plan in 2020 that will achieve a measurable impact on both local criminal justice systems and emergency rooms in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Indian Rivers’ objective is to systemically identify those with serious mental illness who arrive at the Tuscaloosa County Jail and DCH hospital emergency rooms in order to provide them with mental health treatment as well as link them to other services they require. Our goal is to reduce the number of people with mental illnesses booked into jail, reduce the length of time spent in jail, reduce readmission in both jail and emergency departments, and increase connections to treatment. We plan to accomplish this by collaborating with the Tuscaloosa County Jail as well as DCH Emergency Departments to identify individuals who meet criteria for the program.
