From the classroom to the community! 📚🤝

We’re proud to spotlight Olivia McDaniel, a BSW student completing her practicum placement with New Heights Community Resource Center in Tuscaloosa. Olivia has been interning with New Heights since May 2026.

During her practicum, Olivia has had the opportunity to engage in community-based social work while supporting New Heights’ efforts to connect individuals and families with essential resources. Recently, Olivia was featured in The Tuscaloosa News while helping prepare food boxes for distribution through New Heights’ summer food efforts.

New Heights Community Resource Center is a collaborative resource hub established by Tuscaloosa City Schools and community partners to connect students, families, and community members with resources including food assistance, health and wellness services, literacy, mentoring, tutoring, and other essential supports - all under one roof.

For Olivia, this experience has provided an opportunity to see community social work in action and further develop her understanding of how social workers can connect individuals and families with resources that support their everyday needs.

We’re excited to see Olivia continue learning, serving, and growing through her practicum experience!

Thankful to our amazing group of volunteers today packing food bags for our families. Northridge High School Civinettes Tuscaloosa City Schools and First Presbyterian Church - Tuscaloosa Serve Day Team First Presbyterian Church - Tuscaloosa We packed over 125 food bags.
