Great children’s book for the 250th -

Your National Librarian is excited to provide some book recommendations to keep learning about Liberty's Legacy as we head back to school this month. His first recommendation is "Her Name Was Mary Katharine" by Ella Schwartz, illustration by Dow Phumiruk. This picture book is about the printing of the Declaration of Independence and how it was shared with the world! Tune back in for more book recommendations throughout the month.

Although Laodicea “Dicey” Langston was only a teenager during the Revolutionary War, according to her obituary, she “performed many daring deeds on behalf of her suffering country and friends”. She spied on her Loyalist neighbors and warned patriot troops of British plans. She saved her invalid father’s life by shielding him with her body when Tories invaded their home. She is a recognized patriot in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Turlock Chapter is proud to have one of her descendants as a member.

Flag Day History

On June 14, 1777, two years into America's fight for independence, the Continental Congress approved the design of a flag to represent the new nation: "Resolved: that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation."

In 1916, as the nation grappled with whether to enter a different war, President Woodrow Wilson established the anniversary as "Flag Day".
