Although Laodicea “Dicey” Langston was only a teenager during the Revolutionary War, according to her obituary, she “performed many daring deeds on behalf of her suffering country and friends”. She spied on her Loyalist neighbors and warned patriot troops of British plans. She saved her invalid father’s life by shielding him with her body when Tories invaded their home. She is a recognized patriot in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Turlock Chapter is proud to have one of her descendants as a member.

Flag Day History

On June 14, 1777, two years into America's fight for independence, the Continental Congress approved the design of a flag to represent the new nation: "Resolved: that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation."

In 1916, as the nation grappled with whether to enter a different war, President Woodrow Wilson established the anniversary as "Flag Day".
