Dear Governor Hochul,
I am writing to urge you to include and fully support the 4% targeted inflationary increase in the 2026/2027 New York State budget. This investment is not only necessary, but also critical to sustaining the essential workforce that supports individuals with developmental disabilities across our state.
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are the backbone of care for people with developmental disabilities. Every day, they provide hands-on, compassionate support that allows individuals to live with dignity, independence, and inclusion in their communities. Their responsibilities are vast and deeply impactful: assisting with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, and meal preparation; administering medications; supporting behavioral and emotional needs; ensuring health and safety; coordinating medical appointments; and helping individuals engage in meaningful community activities and employment.
Despite the immense responsibility and skill required for this role, DSPs remain significantly underpaid. Their wages have not kept pace with inflation, making it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain qualified staff. Many DSPs are forced to leave the field for higher-paying jobs with less responsibility, creating staffing shortages that directly impact the quality and continuity of care for vulnerable New Yorkers.
This workforce crisis is not sustainable. Without competitive wages and meaningful investment, providers cannot maintain adequate staffing levels, and individuals with developmental disabilities risk losing the consistent, high-quality support they depend on.
The proposed 4% targeted inflationary increase is a necessary step toward addressing these challenges. It will help stabilize the workforce, improve retention, and recognize the essential value of DSPs. These professionals dedicate their lives to supporting others, often under demanding and emotionally taxing conditions, and they deserve compensation that reflects their critical role in our communities.
I respectfully ask that you prioritize this increase in the final budget. Investing in Direct Support Professionals is an investment in the health, safety, and dignity of thousands of New Yorkers.
Thank you for your leadership and consideration.
Sincerely,
Scott Stiles, CEO
