A special program on the life of Ruby Elzy, an African American woman born in Pontotoc, MS, who rose to fame in the 1930s, will be presented by Terry Swindol at the meeting of the Northeast Mississippi Historical and Genealogical Society. The Society will meet at noon, April 26, 2018 at the Lee County Library, 219 North Madison, Tupelo, MS. The public is invited to this free program.
Ruby Elzy, born in abject poverty in 1908 in Pontotoc, MS, rose to national fame as a singer in movies, stage and operatic productions. She excelled at Julliard School of Music and was chosen by George Gershwin for a lead in his musical masterpiece ā€œPorgie and Bessā€. She performed for Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt at the White House. Called the ā€œBlack Diva of the Thirtiesā€, she achieved career heights much greater than most African Americans during the early 1900s.
Her life was cut short when she died at age 35 during a routine surgery. She was the first African American to be buried in the Pontotoc Cemetery, a traditionally all white burying ground.
