The Git R’ Done gang (formerly the Deer Park Lumber team), has been part of the relay for life since 1996. When 4 team members set up their headquarters in a camper on the Tunkhannock High School track (where the first couple of Wyoming County Relay For Life events were held). Over the past 15 years (and the 2009 merger with the TOPS team), the Git R’ Done gang has grown tremendously and currently
has approximately 2 dozen members whose ages range from just 3 months old to 85 years old! Their team has 4 breast cancer survivors, 1 kidney cancer survivor, and 1 colon cancer survivor. The team walks in honor of over 20 friends and family members who have survived and over 10 who have passed from cancer. Twice they have won top fundraiser honors with several well known fundraisers including their tree of love (trees lit up for Christmas in which each bulb represents a loved one who has been lost or has survived), Welch Cookie sales, all night bingo, and sno kone sales. Their Sno Kone motto is “have sno kone machine will travel” often using it at several events per year, all over our community. Twice the Git R’ Done Gang has won the most spirited award with many close seconds. Their members are likely heard screaming for miles when their team name is called. In addition they can be seen carrying their entire “junk drawer” to the relay in anticipation of the ever so popular “scavenger hunt”! These fundraising efforts and the hard work of their team members have helped raise over $70,000 for the American Cancer Society in the 15 years they have relayed. They hope to spend many more years raising money to fight cancer together because they truly believe that one day there will be a cure and relayers will get us there!
