Northern Tier Industry & Education Consortium

Northern Tier Industry & Education Consortium School-to-Work nonprofit serving northeastern Pennsylvania with work-based learning programs.

NTIEC was founded in 1993 as a 501c-3 School-to-Work organization to serve students in the six Northern Tier counties by integrating the education and employment processes. The basic premise is that students who have a good understanding of career opportunities, especially through first-hand experience, can make informed career and educational choices. Also, students who have mastered basic workpl

ace skills and discipline are in a preferred position for hiring. Employers participate in the education process and benefit by having a stronger pool of employment candidates. Schools can show relevancy of academic work and have more motivated students. Students and parents both benefit by fewer false starts and a shorter path to appropriate degrees and certifications needed for career success. Programs over the last year include: Internships, Youth Apprenticeships (YAP), Job Shadowing, Healthcare Career Day, Careers in Hot Demand, Vehicular Career Day, Yearly Lecture Serious, Summer Career Experiences (Agriculture & Leadership, Healthcare and Energy & Oilfield), Safety City, Career Pathway Presentations, Virtual One-on-One Career Discussions, Financial Literacy and much more!

🌟Outstanding Student Award Winner!🌟

Dylan Copp is our next Outstanding Student Award winner! Dylan recently graduated from Wellsboro Area School District. He has participated in NTIEC’s School-to-Work internship program for the past 2 years while working at Trinity Lutheran School as a cafeteria aide. Dylan was an asset to the school, consistently showing up, performing his tasks, exceeding expectations while working with the children, and so much more! Supervisor Janice Hughes says, “We will miss Dylan. He has been a wonderful addition to the team and will do anything that is asked of him. He works hard, is always on time, and is a great kid.”

For those reasons, along with his perfect evaluations this academic year, Dylan received one of our awards & a $100 scholarship check to use as he begins his future. Dylan will be attending Commonwealth University-Mansfield to complete their municipal policy academy program. We know he will do great and look forward to seeing all that he does within our community!

🌟Here is another Student Spotlight from this academic year!🌟

Isaac Ryan, a 2026 Lackawanna Trail graduate, worked as a Pipeline Blanket Fabrication Technician at Smith Air, Inc.

Isaac will travel to Montanna to study Construction Engineering Technology at Montanna State University. “I loved this internship experience. It was the perfect solution for my senior year. It gave me a taste of the real world and allowed me to grow as an employee. Simple thinks like getting up and being on time, became very important. My person-to-person communication skills had to improve. I learned my job so well that I became the instructor for new employees. Working in the fabrication setting, within the energy industry helped me select my field of study for college.”

When asked about recommending the internship experience to other students, Ryan responded-“do-it!”

Thank you to Eric Aten, Ryan’s supervisor for the internship and to Ed Ware, President of Smith Air Inc. for making Ryan’s internship so rewarding.

🤩Student Spotlight!🥳

North Penn-Mansfield High School senior John Spohn has demonstrated tremendous growth, responsibility, and time-management skills during his time in the school-to-work internship program.

For the past two years, John has been employed by Lisowski’s Excavating, where his passion for operating heavy equipment has made the work-based learning pathway a perfect fit. John has always had a strong interest in heavy equipment, and his experience at Lisowski’s has allowed him to turn that passion into valuable hands-on experience.

Throughout his employment, John has been mentored by several employees at Lisowski’s, each sharing their own paths to success while encouraging him to stay focused on his education, earn his diploma, and continue pursuing further opportunities after high school.

While working at the company, John has strengthened his work ethic, sharpened his vehicle mechanics skills, and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of teamwork and responsibility in the workplace. Following graduation, John plans to continue his employment with Lisowski’s Excavating.

In recognition of his accomplishments, John was awarded a scholarship by NTIEC for being named Outstanding Student. He is pictured below with his mentors and supervisors.

🌟Student Spotlight!🌟

Caroline Symuleski, a 2026 Mountain View graduate, completed an unpaid internship as a Classroom Assistant in the Mountain View Elementary Center.
Caroline will study Early Childhood Education at Misericordia University. She entered the internship experience thinking she wanted to be a teacher and is now even more convinced that she has selected the right career path!

Tracking Caroline’s progress was easy. She regularly shared photos of the various crafts and art projects she implemented with the students. She gained experience in two separate classrooms. She was supervised by Jamie Supansic. Thank you to the entire Mountain View School District, Mrs. Supansic and Principal McGarry for making this possible.

🤩Student Spotlight!🥳

Emily Darr from Williamson High school (Northern Tioga School District) is the recipient of one of NTIEC’s Outstanding Student Awards for this past school year. She has demonstrated exceptional dedication, responsibility, and professionalism throughout her participation in the School to Work Internship Program. By balancing academic responsibilities with workplace requirements, she has shown remarkable initiative and a strong work ethic.

Emily participated in this program while working at two different worksites in Tioga, PA. Her primary worksite was Penny’s Daycare, where she was a classroom aide. Her second worksite was a seasonal job at Jones Kones where customer service was a key focus. In both places, Emily consistently showed her willingness to work hard, as indicated by both employers.

After graduation, Emily plans to attend the dental hygiene program at BOCES. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition and continued success in future endeavors!

🌟Outstanding Student Spotlight!🌟

Greta Krimmel, a 2026 Lackawanna Trail graduate, worked as an office and procedure assistant for Dr. Karam, of Karam Orthodontics.

Greta will study Biology and play Division I field hockey at Hofstra University. She intends to pursue pre-med and hopes to work in a hospital setting. She recently completed a job shadow with a heart surgeon and that experience shifted her career goal away from clinical specialties to medical specialties that see a variety of cases in a hospital setting.

When asked about her internship, Greta describes a very positive environment that allowed her to explore a variety of clinical interactions. It allowed her to get a real for career “likes and dislikes.” “My mentor, Dr. Karam allowed me to be myself while coaching me in a professional setting. He was great!”

At first, the staff was intimidating but they showed me that you can do great work and still have fun on the job. I started out quiet and reserved and they helped me get comfortable and come out of my shell. “I would 100% recommend the intern experience for any high school student serious about career exploration.”

🌟Outstanding Student Spotlight!🥳

Ashtyn Burdick is a junior at Cowanesque Valley High School (Northern Tioga School District) and is one of this years’ Outstanding Student Award winners! He completed all requirements of the School-to-Work Internship program and had positive quarterly reviews from his employer. Ashtyn began his internship at River Valley Golf Course, but eventually found something that aligned more with his career goal, so he changed his worksite to County Line Fabrications in Elkland, PA. This experience was eye-opening and fun for Ashtyn. He has learned about welding, safety in the workplace, metal fabrications, and teamwork. He says that he has also learned a lot about problem solving by being around like-minded guys every day. Mentors Ryan Hoke and Daniel Lawson shared how much Ashtyn has grown in his skills, saying that they forget he is a student at times! We appreciate their collaboration in providing this experience and look forward to partnering in upcoming years to help more students learn about the metal fabrication industry.

Because of his hard work and commitment to learning on the job, Ashtyn is the recipient of this award + a $100 check! We are proud of him and his hard work and look forward to seeing him in our program again next year! Great job, Ashtyn!
