Underground Miners

Underground Miners We are dedicated to preserving Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal mining heritage. To achieve this mission, Underground Miners has three goals:

1.

Mission: Underground Miners is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, dedicated to preserving Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal mining heritage through a historical online archive, equipment restoration, and educational public events. Create and maintain the largest archive of anthracite mining history, by both creating a website with searchable online information, as well as a more extensive archive with

more in depth information. These will contain photos, drawings, maps, papers, and artifacts, all preserved through digitization.

2. Continue to preserve, restore, and grow a collection of rare anthracite mining artifacts and equipment. This includes everything from miner’s lamps to mine locomotives. Most significantly, the current collection includes the only operating locomotive from the northern coal field.

3. Educate the public through interactive events, creating excitement and interest in anthracite heritage. This includes private in-depth mine tours at the area’s tour mines, hands on open house events at the restoration shop, and public presentations throughout different coal region events.

Looks like a great weekend coming up! Cmon out to the Brooks Mine where you can watch our volunteers continue work outside the mine extending the rail line for future use! Track laying, rail bending and spiking will be the order of the day! It will also be a great day for a mine tour from one of our knowledgeable tour guides! Don’t have time for a full tour, no problem you are free to take a quick walk through the mine at your own pace as well! Admission to the Brooks Mine is always free but we greatly accept your donations! Those donations are what allows our volunteers the ability to continually improve the exhibits inside and outside the mine! Stop on by and hope to see you this Saturday or sometime soon!

We would like to once again thank the Robert Y Moffat Family Charitable Trust for a generous general operating support grant that we are applying to our restoration and fabrication shop. We have some exciting things coming out of the shop in the next month or so, but to share what’s currently in production, we have our current mine car restoration. This is a mine car we built once before back in 2006, but was due for an overhaul. R&R logging and sawmill in Mehoopany provided all the Oak for the car and this time we are treating each beam with our special blend of preservative. Once this car is done we are moving right into restoring the original Brooks Mine Coal Car. We have all the wood as well to restore this car. Stay tuned, we will have more to come from the shop this summer!
