This week South Sound GREEN, Nisqually River Education Project, and the Chehalis Basin Education Consortium met teachers at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge for one of our annual professional development events, Summer Institute for Teachers. This year’s theme was Empowering Teachers Towards Salmon Recovery.

On the first day, we had wonderful speakers from the Office of Native Education at OSPI, the Nisqually Indian Tribe, and a variety of environmental organizations including Long Live the Kings, the Deschutes Estuary Restoration Team, the Governor’s Salmon Recovery Office, and many more. Teachers engaged in break out sessions where they learned about salmon recovery related materials that can be brought back to the classroom. Day one was a success and it left us excited for the next two days to come!

The 2023-2024 school year has come to an end here in Thurston County and as we reflect on the year we have had at South Sound GREEN, it is impossible not to think of all our volunteers.

We would like to send a huge THANK YOU to all the wonderful volunteers we have had the pleasure of working with this school year. South Sound GREEN could not run our programs without you. We so appreciate the time and energy you put into being outside with students and sharing your knowledge. Your generosity and kindness do not go unnoticed, and we could not be more grateful for your support. We hope you have a fantastic summer, and we will see you in the fall!

Our nearshore field trips with Olympia School District 8th graders came to a close at the end of last week. Students were encouraged to choose four of six stations that were aligned with their personal learning and career interests. We had a lot of fun working with students in the woods and on the beach! They explored beach biodiversity, engaged in oyster dissections, and learned about plankton during the nearshore portion of their day. For the upland stations, students investigated invasive and native plants, used forestry concepts, and played wildlife themed games to learn about population dynamics.

Thank you to OSD teachers and students for meeting us out at Meyer’s Point Environmental Field Station for these trips and to the many community partners that led stations for students!

Olympia School District 3rd graders day: definitely more crabs!

3rd grade nearshore trips are underway, and they are a blast! Students play CRAB-O (crab-based BINGO) and learn about animal adaptations while they search for intertidal species. These trips are hands-on and offer students a chance the explore the beach with their classmates.

8th grade nearshore trips with Olympia School District have begun! For these trips, students join us at Meyer’s Point Environmental Field Station to rotate through four of six stations. There are three nearshore stations and three upland stations. Students get to explore the beach, dissect oysters, and look at and learn about plankton during the nearshore portion of their day. The upland stations include forestry, native and invasive plants, and wildlife lessons. These trips are very fun and we are excited for the many more to come!
