At the Board of Trustees meeting in Chehalis on Wednesday evening, our local president delivered a public comment calling to rescind the remaining involuntary layoffs of eight library workers who are essential to the functioning of our branches, and to initiate an independent audit of TRL’s governance and financial forecasting to ensure that taxpayer money is managed effectively moving forward.

AFSCME Local 3758B, the union representing most Timberland Regional Library (TRL) workers, announces that on Wednesday, April 15th, 2026, TRL leadership agreed to rescind over 80% of involuntary layoff notices sent to frontline library workers in March. This outcome reflects the strength of union workers in rallying public support for library services. We thank everyone—union members, library patrons, and community members —who spoke out and stood with us during this difficult period.

While this step represents meaningful progress, significant challenges facing the TRL library system remain.

Libraries and library workers provide deeply meaningful services and support to our communities. But by May 15th, nearly 40% of Timberland Regional Library’s frontline branch staff will be gone due to layoffs, while 3 additional branches are planned to operate without staff, fundamentally changing what the library can provide to the community. Swipe through to learn how library workers play a crucial part in supporting the health of our communities.

Please continue contacting the Board of Trustees at [email protected] calling for a pause on layoffs.

Today we say goodbye to our Local 3758 President of 4 years, Meghan Hall. Meghan is one of 17 frontline library workers taking a voluntary layoff due to TRL’s ongoing, shocking budget crisis. She has been working at the Lacey Library for over two decades, beginning as a book shelver and for the last several years as a children’s librarian.

She says: “Volunteering with the library workers union has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. We have come together to make our voices heard in the library system, we have fought back against the layoffs, and we will keep fighting. We are strong, informed, and united as union members. Our work matters, we help our communities, and we deserve to be treated fairly. Thank you to everyone who has our back."

We will miss you Meghan! 💚

A library with dedicated workers is one that supports its community. We help create educated community members, reduce barriers to knowledge, ensure free access to information and books for everyone, fight against book banning, and offer a space for all to safely organize around their beliefs. We participated in No Kings cause the fight is national AND it starts local.

Thank you to the TRL Board of Trustees for taking steps forward to make our library system strong, healthy, and financially transparent. As we move forward, we still need full accountability for the crisis leading to 61 workers being laid off. The current budget crisis did not happen overnight, and it did not arise because of these 61 employees' valuable work on the frontlines of our libraries.

We call for a pause on layoffs until the Board receives a full decisionmaking and leadership audit for all administrators who made this layoff plan.

We call for the TRL Board of Trustees to ensure that there are no long-lasting negative impacts and risks to taxpayers and communities due to a lack of contract compliance in how the layoffs were planned and implemented by leadership.

Finally, we call for a voice at the table in TRL. We see how decisionmaking has become concentrated in a few people at the very top of our organization, and how it has weakened us as a library system. We care about our libraries and communities, and as the people who directly interact with library patrons every day, we are the ones with the valuable insights you need in this moment.
