A leiomyosarcoma diagnosis can bring more questions than answers. Where do you start?

LMSDR recommends consulting a sarcoma specialist before making treatment decisions and keeping copies of your pathology reports, scans, and other medical records. Support and reliable information can help you prepare for the conversations ahead. 💜

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) begins when gene mutations occur in the DNA of a single smooth muscle cell, causing that cell to multiply and form a tumor.

But what causes that initial mutation? At this time, we don’t know. More research is needed to better understand why LMS develops and what factors may play a role.

Knowledge and research are important steps toward better answers for the LMS community. 💜

What is leiomyosarcoma (LMS)?

Leiomyosarcoma is an uncommon cancer that develops from smooth muscle cells—the involuntary muscles found throughout the body. It most often occurs in areas such as the uterus, extremities, large blood Jo vessels, and retroperitoneum. Because LMS is rare and can behave unpredictably, learning about the disease and connecting with experienced sarcoma specialists can be an important part of navigating a diagnosis.
