Members of 1776 Auxiliary joined the Dept President Donna Snodgrass 2nd vice Edie Thomas and dept treasurer Patti Parish at the walk hosted by The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 184 in Moore Oklahoma today. It was an honor to walk along side those who lost their loved ones. Thank you Amanda Nieto for all that you do to keep veteran su***de in the forefront.

October 7, 2001.

Twenty-five years ago today, the first airstrikes hit Afghanistan and Operation Enduring Freedom began. The war it opened would run for nearly twenty years. An entire generation enlisted into it, deployed into it, and came home from it.

Some of them were not born when it started.

There are Veterans today who were in elementary school on September 11 and in Helmand by the time they were twenty. There are families who sent a father to that war and then a son. There are people who did four tours, five, six, and then came home to a country that had largely stopped thinking about it.

Here is the number almost nobody knows.

According to Brown University's Costs of War project, 7,057 American service members were killed in post-9/11 war operations. Over that same period, 30,177 active duty personnel and Veterans of those wars died by su***de.

More than four times as many have died after the war than during it.

That analysis published in 2021. The figure is five years old and it has not gone down.

Today is not about whether the war was won. It is about the people who answered when it started, carried it for twenty years, and are still carrying it now.
