We are approaching the date of our first concert! April 24, 1967.
Founded in 1967 by the Tulsa Parks and Recreation Department, the Tulsa Community Band has been a vital part of the Tulsa community for over five decades. Originally rehearsing at the Tulsa Park Recreation Center at 1028 E 6th Street, the band performed regularly on Thursday evenings and participated in various events throughout the city, including performances at local parks.
Under the initial direction of AJ (Armin) McNaughton, conductor of the American Legion Band and Akdar Shrine Band, the Tulsa Community Band quickly grew in both size and influence, with many members from these bands, as well as former members of the Oil Capitol Band, joining its ranks. After McNaughton’s unexpected passing in 1968, Jim Munson of KRAV Radio assumed leadership in 1969. Munson, also the conductor of the American Legion Band, continued to build the band’s reputation within the community.
In the early 1970s, Lew Norris took over as conductor, leading the band until the early 1980s, with Mike Thompson briefly conducting in 1982. Bud Langdon served a few years as conductor in the early 1980’s. Dwight Dailey became the band’s conductor in 1990, a role he held until 2015. Paris York served as associate conductor from 1999 to 2015.
Today, the Tulsa Community Band continues its long-standing tradition of musical excellence. The band rehearses weekly on Thursday evenings at the Union 6th and 7th Grade Center in Tulsa, carrying forward its commitment to enriching the cultural life of the city through live performances and community involvement.
