Tulsa Hills Youth Ranch

Tulsa Hills Youth Ranch THYR exists to bring healing to the brains of traumatized youth and to bring hope to them and to their caregivers.

It was born to provide a welcoming place for kids to feel loved, accepted and heard through a purposeful relationship with a mentor. Tulsa Hills Youth Ranch started in response to the difficult issues many of our youth face today. We will work to help kids gain self respect, confidence and hope through a bond developed between a child, a mentor and a horse. We will provide opportunities for ranch

chores along with fun activities chosen by the youth and mentor together which may include various activities with a horse, artwork, board games, frisbee golf, fishing, reading or just sitting on a rock talking. Our goal is to foster healthy relationships that last far beyond these sessions into different seasons of life, filling a relational gap that exists for many young people. Our intent is that hope is renewed, that healing and restoration are realized, and that trust is reborn for each person served through the ranch.

MEET ERIN AWTREY - THYR VOLUNTEER:

"Having ridden horses competitively since the age of 9, I was desperately searching for a barn here in Tulsa. My husband and two children and I had moved here 2 years ago for our 9th move! My neighbor, a teacher at Holland Hall, had just taken her class to THYR for a field trip and encouraged me to reach out to them. What a blessing that turned out to be. I now have the pleasure of volunteering out there riding horses and doing any other jobs that need attention.
For me, contributing to this safe haven for so many traumatized children is an absolute joy. Just knowing that anything I do out there is in direct conjunction to the Ranch's ability to help heal these children makes my heart so happy."

[THYR leadership did not want to miss this opportunity to tell you more about Erin's manifold contribution to THYR. She is willing to do anything, and seemingly can do everything! Do you see the pics of the Co****le boards, the Adirondack chairs, and "Rudolph" in this post? Erin made those! She is quite the whiz in the woodworking shop, having repaired and rebuilt picnic tables, repaired our mounting platform in our riding arena, built the potato towers, repaired the rope swing, and more! Further, she is a fantastic cook and baker, having delighted us and the community with her gourmet cookies and has been known to show up with homemade beef jerky because she knows one of the youth at THYR loves it!
AND, having mentioned that she rides horses here and has since age 9, you'll probably notice from the pic of her riding Mandy at the Ranch, that she is quite an expert rider, having won championships at equine events in the past, and now improving our Ranch herd through her riding, exercising, caring for, and evaluation of the horses.
MOST OF ALL, though, Erin's greatest contribution is the kind and sweet disposition of her heart, felt by everyone she engages here, and the humble motivation for why she serves. I have often said to others that one of my greatest delights in the Ranch is the rich community of people that has formed here, and THYR is all the richer for Erin's presence. She has become a dear friend. We are glad she reached out!]

THYR turns 10 YEARS OLD - Founders' Reflection

It’s hard to believe that ten years have passed since we began this incredible journey. What started with just one 17-year-old boy in May of 2014 has now grown into a thriving community where we serve up to 60 youth every week. From humble beginnings to where we are today, it’s been a journey of growth, love and dedication - and we want to take a moment to thank YOU for being part of it.

When we started this journey, there were only a few of us. To be honest, we had no idea what we were doing...
