Understand God’s Plan for Your Life

God can use your separation or divorce to help you understand His plan for your life. God created you for a specific purpose that only you can fulfill. In order to know where He is directing you and to hear what He is saying to you, you must draw near to Him, spend time developing that relationship, and start praying about how God can use you.

Dr. Myles Munroe says, ā€œGod created everybody for a purpose. You were not born for the purpose of being married; therefore, you must discover the dream God put in your heart. There’s something He wants done on this earth that requires your life.ā€

The story of Esther in the Bible is a beautiful story of a young, orphaned Jewish girl who, through God’s sovereignty, was chosen to be queen. While Esther was queen, a plan had been put into effect to destroy all Jews in Persia. In the face of great personal danger, Esther was obedient to God and approached the king on behalf of the Jews. Because Esther was in that unique position, she was able to save hundreds of lives. The Bible says that God placed Esther in that royal position ā€œfor such a time as this.ā€

Those key words can also apply to your life. There will come a time (or times) when God has planned for you to be in a certain place, at a certain time, and at a certain level of spiritual maturity to fulfill His purpose. He is preparing you ā€œfor such a time as this.ā€ Be ready!

ā€œWho knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?ā€ (Esther 4:13-14).

How God Uses Pain

Even though God did not cause your divorce or separation, He can use it for your good. Let’s look at some of the ways He does this. Perhaps you have chosen paths in life that led you away from God. He can use the separation or divorce as a way to help point you back into a relationship with Him.

ā€œWhen you want to have a close relationship with someone,ā€ says Cathy, ā€œyou spend hours of time with that person. That’s how you fall in love with God. You get to know Him on a one-on-one basis. That’s what happens when you’re forced through your pain to spend hours of time praying for relief, help, and strength.

"I’m thankful I had to go through it. As horrible as it was, I would go through it again to be who I am now in relation to Christ. I’m a stronger person. I’m stronger in my faith. I’m stronger in my compassion for other people. I’m stronger in my commitment to the Lord and to my family. I’m a better person now.

"You couldn’t have told me that then,ā€ continues Cathy, ā€œI remember praying that I wouldn’t grow anymore: ā€˜Lord, this hurts too much. If this is for growth, I don’t want to grow.’ But I’m glad He loved me enough to let me suffer through that to be where I am now and to have the relationship I now have with Him.ā€

The Bible says that every trial you face is an opportunity for God to show His goodness to you and for you to become more like Christ.

ā€œWe know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purposeā€ (Romans 8:28).

Healing Through God

Kay Arthur shares, ā€œHaving been divorced and having seen the pain and the consequences of being divorced in my own life and in the lives of my children, I can still say that there is healing. There is healing because God’s name is Jehovah Rapha, the Lord God who heals. He is the God of second chances. He is the God who turns ashes into beauty and gives us a garment of praise instead of a garment of mourning and sorrow. With God there is healing for anything, even the trauma of divorce.ā€

God’s healing is not a superficial healing, where the outside may look great but the wounds on the inside are still bleeding. He can heal anything that has hurt you, and His healing is deep and eternal. Believe this and cling to this hope. Allow God to turn your ā€œashesā€ into beauty and to clothe you with a garment of praise. Pray for healing.

God makes this promise in the book of Isaiah:

He promises to ā€œprovide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendorā€ (Isaiah 61:3).
