Remembering Pat Fallin

Tulsa Global Alliance joins Sister Cities International and communities across the country in mourning the passing of Pat Fallin, a longtime SCI board member, SCI Oklahoma State Representative, and passionate citizen diplomat.

A native Oklahoman and recent Tulsa resident, Pat brought wisdom, warmth, and unwavering energy to every room she entered. Her leadership helped grow the Sister Cities network across three states: Colorado, California, and most recently Oklahoma. Her mentorship and advocacy inspired countless volunteers and civic leaders.

Pat never had an “off” button when it came to international friendship. This Spring, she supported our new Tulsa-Mwanza Sister City Partnership's first delegation to Tulsa. This summer, she was in Fort Worth helping advance SCI’s Pacific Islands partnerships. Her fingerprints are all over the growth of our global community, and her legacy will endure in the programs, people, and peace she helped build.

We are grateful for her leadership, her friendship, and her tireless commitment to citizen diplomacy.

✨ Strengthening citizen diplomacy through Tulsa hospitality!

TGA hosted 20 German Bundestag (parliament) staffers August 11-15 through the “Beyond Washington” program, which is funded by the U.S. Embassy in Berlin. Several families hosted the guests for home hospitality dinner, and TGA also arranged a “Toast the Travelers” dinner reception at Marshall Brewing Company.

One of the German participants, Victor Bashkatov, shared this about his experience: “One of the most memorable parts of the program has been the warm hospitality of our host family during a shared dinner. These moments go far beyond a simple meal — they are a form of dinner diplomacy, where stories, perspectives, and laughter help bridge the Atlantic. Such evenings create genuine connections between people from Germany and the United States, fostering a deeper understanding not only between our countries, but also between the participants who shape the transatlantic relationship every day.”

TGA Board Member Tina Peña spoke about her experience meeting the German delegation at Toast the Travelers: “What an exciting experience it was to share a meal with our international guests! It was a chance to truly connect, exchange ideas, and build friendships. Over delicious food, we talked about political stances, current issues, and our different perspectives, discovering how much we can learn from one another as a global community. Moments like these remind me that understanding often begins with something as simple and joyful as breaking bread together.”

🇲🇽🪏🇺🇸 Last week, we were proud to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Caja de Agua at Tulsa Botanic Garden! This beautiful gift from our first Sister City of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, is a replica of the iconic 19th-century water reservoir that will stand over 8 feet tall and feature plants native to Mexico.

The original Caja de Agua, constructed between 1827 and 1835, served as the endpoint of a 6 kilometer aqueduct that brought spring water into the city and remains one of the most recognized monuments in San Luis Potosí. Soon, Tulsa will have its own version, symbolizing the deep connection between our two cities.

As we celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Tulsa-San Luis Potosí Sister City Partnership, Tulsa Global Alliance is honored to help bring this meaningful symbol to life. A ribbon cutting is planned for October 19, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to experience this monument to friendship once it is complete!

⚠️ Advocacy Deadline Approaching!

Congress is finalizing the 2026 budget, and funding for our international exchange programs is on the line. These programs bring global leaders to Tulsa to share best practices with organizations, volunteer in our communities, and enjoy Tulsa tourism and hospitality. In addition to making up almost half of TGA’s annual budget, every dollar spent brings $11 of economic impact back to Tulsa!

🌐 Dinner diplomacy in action with Councilor Christian Bengel 🍽️

Tulsa Global Alliance hosted 20 German Bundestag staff members in August of 2025 through the “Beyond Washington” program, funded by the U.S. Embassy in Berlin. During their visit, Tulsa Global Alliance arranged a “Toast the Travelers” dinner reception for them at Marshall Brewing Company. One of the Tulsa guests was Tulsa City Councilor Christian Bengel, District 6 , who is designated as Honorary Ambassador to Tulsa’s Sister City of Celle, Germany. Bengel had met with the delegation earlier in the week and spoke with them about the duties and responsibilities of the Tulsa City Council. He joined the group again at Toast the Travelers for dinner and conversation, and had this to say about the value of dinner diplomacy:

“It has been a profound privilege to serve as Tulsa’s City Council representative and honorary ambassador to our sister city, Celle, Germany. Over the past three years, I’ve had the honor of engaging with students, first responders, and parliamentary staff—experiences that have deepened my appreciation for the power of cultural exchange.

Through these interactions, I’ve witnessed firsthand how communities across the globe face many of the same challenges we do here in Tulsa. These shared experiences, even more openly shared over a casual meal, remind us that we are more alike than our preconceptions might suggest. They also reinforce the importance of building bridges of understanding and collaboration.

I am deeply grateful to organizations like Tulsa Global Alliance and Global Ties U.S. for their unwavering commitment to fostering international relationships. Their work empowers local communities to connect with global citizens, strengthening diplomacy and mutual respect from the ground up. Together, we are shaping a future where dialogue, empathy, and cooperation transcend borders. I look forward to continuing this mission and encouraging others to join in the journey of global connection.”
