Our afterschool program kids always love feeding the farm animals at YouthWorks Ranch, but they had even more fun this week after a shipment of donated coconuts came in for the pigs. The boys I lead in my group got to smash them on rocks so the pigs can get into them to eat. The kids were so funny chanting “coconuts, coconuts, coconuts” over and over again during their smashing time. Never a dull moment for sure!

Just a shout out of appreciation today to Anna, Christi, Joseph and Lola for their amazing work in setting up our YouthWorks indoor and outdoor gardens to empower North Tulsa kids to grow fresh produce to prevent/overcome childhood obesity and help adults in our community to prevent/overcome type 2 diabetes.

The results are looking pretty awesome and they are doing a great job teaching the kids!

We wrapped up Bible Week by planting seeds in good soil, receiving Bibles generously provided by Asbury Church, and celebrating the week together with Chick-fil-A. Thankful for a meaningful week spent growing in faith and community.

SPOTLIGHT: YouthWorks students Lola and Aaron have been leaders over the years teaching North Tulsa kids how to make healthy pizzas in the YouthWorks Pizza Factory to serve to men and women who are homeless downtown under the bridges, and to families in North Tulsa's 10 largest apartment complexes. An important part of what the kids learn includes how to garden, use the vegetables harvested to make healthy pizzas, learn nutrition education, and exercise daily. The Mobile Pizza & Produce Trolley outreach is designed to empower the children to share what they have learned with families needing food assistance in our food desert area while providing food that will help reverse type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

What an amazing Christmas Break Camp we had this past week with all the YouthWorks kids!

We were so blessed to have the incredible help from a very caring youth group from Cornerstone Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, who drove all the way to Tulsa to serve the children of North Tulsa for a week!

The youth group helped our kids make tons of pizzas, go downtown to pass out pizzas and show God’s love to dozens of men and women who are homeless, go on daily field trips to some awesome Tulsa venues, lead the kids in daily devotions and character building lessons, and the adult chaperones shared with the kids about their careers (nursing, inventory management, gymnastic coaching, etc).

The students also spent a day at YouthWorks Ranch working on outdoor gardens and helping prepare YouthWorks’ Multiponic Greenhouse for the next season of indoor planting that starts when the kids return for the Spring Semester of our 30-week After School Program.

Big thank you to Cornerstone Church for all their help this week, OSU Dietetic Intern Lily Buskirk for teaching the kids about nutrition education, Central High School coach Chuck Cobbins for teaching the kids about his career, and these generous sites for blessing the kids with fun field trips: Oklahoma Aquarium, Hutcherson YMCA Aquatics, and Winterfest ice skating.

The kids had an incredible blast, and what’s more, the kids got to eat two meals a day with us, we were able to send food home to their families, and quite a few people blessed the kids with coats and warm winter clothes!

We couldn’t have had a better Christmas / New Year’s celebration with some of the coolest kids in Tulsa! We truly are grateful to God for pouring out so many blessings in one week!

If you would like to join us to bless the kids of North Tulsa, Spring semester starts Tuesday, January 20. Let us know if you would like to come out to share your talents and encouragement with the kids from 4:00-6:30 PM any day Monday to Thursday during the afterschool program. Thank you in advance!
