The Tulsa Youth Symphony is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1963 with a mission to provide advanced musical training and exceptional performance opportunities to our community’s future leaders. Tulsa Youth Symphony was founded in 1963 with a mission to provide advanced orchestral training and performance experience for talented young musicians in northeastern Oklahoma. We work to instill a love for music and stimulate an interest in the arts that will create an audience and patrons for the future. Our organization is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit supported by a combination of sources including tuition, volunteerism, concert admission, grants, special projects and donations.

It has been almost 2 weeks since we learned this season will be the last for our community partner, Signature Symphony at TCC.

Through our partnership with both Signature Symphony and Tulsa Community College, TYS students have shared the stage with professional musicians side by side in concerts, open rehearsals, guest artists and more. Signature has been a source of continuing education of our coaches and conductors and employs many of the private instructors who teach TYS students, and of students across northeast Oklahoma. Thousands have been impacted by Signature Symphony’s educational outreach in our community over the years, inspiring creativity for people of all ages.

While our future looks bright and support of our mission remains strong, we invite you to continue supporting the broader arts ecosystem as an invaluable community asset. We are grateful for the generosity and connection Signature Symphony has shown us as we shape the Sound of Tulsa’s Future.

Meet our October 24 Prestige Performance Series Studio Strings guest conductor, Ron Spigelman!

A native of Australia, conductor Ron Spigelman serves as Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra as Principal Pops Conductor. He is an honors graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, London. Earlier in his career he was the Associate Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Fort Worth Symphony, Music Director of the Fort Worth Dallas Ballet, San Angelo Symphony, Texas Chamber Orchestra, Springfield Symphony (MO), and the Lake Placid Sinfonietta (NY) where he is now Conductor Emeritus. He has also served as Principal Pops Conductor of the Tulsa, Fort Worth and Syracuse Symphony. Prior to moving to the United States, he was Assistant Conductor of the West Australian, Queensland, and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras.

Ron lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma with his wife Laura, and they have a combined six children. He is Board president of Harmony Project Tulsa, whose mission is to bring instrumental instruction to underserved youth in collaboration with the Tulsa Public Schools. He also recently graduated summa cm laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Human Development with minors in Counseling & Applied Psychology, Sociology, and Communication at Arizona State University, receiving the prestigious School of Social and Family Dynamics Dean’s medal for academic excellence, awarded to one student per graduating class. He was the first fully online student to win this award. Along with a busy schedule of concerts, he is also currently pursuing a master’s in Liberal Studies at Arizona State University with a focus on communication, sociology and psychology in musical leadership.

TYS is excited to welcome Micah Neely as the Ascending Strings guest conductor for October 24th’s Prestige Performance Series event.

Micah Neely serves as Associate Conductor of the Tulsa Youth Symphony and has been on staff since 2020. He is passionate about teaching the next generation, and believes strongly in the power of classical music to change lives, foster strong communities, and build discipline into the lives of all students.

In addition to his work with TYS, Mr. Neely is an orchestra director at Jenks Public Schools, where he leads the 6th Grade Beginning Orchestra program alongside his wife, Rachel. An active violist, he performs regularly with the Tulsa Signature Symphony, Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, and Fort Smith Symphony, and other local ensembles.

Mr. Neely graduated from the University of Tulsa (cum laude)with a Bachelor of Arts in Viola Performance. He lives in the Tulsa area with his wife and son, Rachel and Ezekiel, and if he isn’t in his classroom you can find him at church, on the golf course, or sitting in a rocking chair listening to Mahler.

As we kick off our season we could not be more excited to welcome the revitalized and reimagined Play-a-Thon, a beloved Tulsa Youth Symphony tradition.

With a marathon at the heart of our inspiration we are planning a season FULL of student spotlight performances around our community as we raise support for our program and our students traveling to New York who will perform at Carnegie Hall in June.

As you support the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra for their free community performance at Guthrie Green this Friday night, September 4 at 8pm, be sure to arrive early for Pie Night at Antoinette Bakery & Cafe, and listen to our wonderful student performers.

Let’s all show our support for live classical music and community in our culturally rich corner of Oklahoma!

We would love to extend a huge thank you to our summer digital intern and alumni, Cadence Buss.

Cadence’s favorite memory of her time in TYS was her first concert and performing in an orchestra for the first time, with the highlight being to play the Finale of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.

Cadence is currently attending Oklahoma State University studying Oboe Performance and Arts Administration.

We are proud of you, Cadence!

As summer winds down we must give a huge shout out to all of our students and their wonderful achievements over the summer, including Mia Brown and Simon Carter. Tulsa was well represented in the National Youth Orchestra 2 where students performed at Carnegie Hall with conductor Mei-Ann Chen conductor and then traveled to perform in the Dominican Republic as student musician ambassadors of the U.S. We are very proud of our incredible students! 👏👏👏
