Medical Misconduct: Rhabdomyolysis, Sickle Cell Trait, and Why the News Is Incorrectly Labeling It as Hazing?????

Rhabdomyolysis happens when muscles break down too quickly and spill their contents into the bloodstream. This overload can damage the kidneys, disrupt the body’s chemistry, affect the heart, and cause collapse. It is a medical emergency, not a behavior‑based incident.

People with Sickle Cell Trait (HbAS) are at higher risk during intense physical activity. Hard exercise — especially in heat, without enough water, at high altitude, or during tough athletic or military‑style drills — can make their red blood cells change shape. When this happens, the blood can’t carry enough oxygen to the muscles, causing fast muscle breakdown and exertional rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to sudden collapse.

The CDC, NCAA, and U.S. Military classify exertional sickling as a medical event. However, if coaching staff knew the athlete’s Sickle Cell Trait status and failed to follow required SCT safety protocols, that failure constitutes medical misconduct.

During intense conditioning, an SCT athlete may collapse because their red blood cells sickle under stress. This leads to muscle breakdown, myoglobin release, kidney risk, and exertional collapse.

*** A coach’s presence does not make this hazing.
*** The collapse is caused by physiology, not behavior.

Hazing = intentional behavioral abuse.
Medical misconduct = ignoring known SCT safety protocols.
Exertional sickling = a documented medical emergency.

A collapse caused by SCT physiology is not hazing, but it IS medical misconduct if staff knew and ignored SCT protocols.
