Oklahoma Coalition Against Human Trafficking ... a multidisciplinary response to all forms of human trafficking

06/09/2026

Human trafficking doesn’t always start with threats. Often, traffickers begin by establishing trust: a promise of love, safety, and belonging that ultimately turns into control.

Knowing the red flags to look out for is crucial because you deserve honest love, not one that sets out to manipulate.❤️‍🩹

Men can be trafficked too.
In fact, studies show that males account for 40 percent of trafficking victims worldwide.
They also face some additional challenges including stigma, the stereotype of men as perpetrators, reluctance to self identify and a lack of services.

Human trafficking survivors often face lasting effects of trauma long after they have escaped exploitation. PTSD can affect every aspect of daily life, causing flashbacks, anxiety, nightmares, difficulty trusting others, and a constant sense of danger.

These responses are not signs of weakness. They are common reactions to prolonged trauma and abuse.

This PTSD Awareness Month, we recognize the resilience of trafficking survivors and the importance of trauma-informed support, counseling, advocacy, and community resources that help survivors heal and rebuild their lives.

By increasing awareness and understanding, we can reduce stigma and create spaces where survivors feel safe, supported, and empowered in their recovery.

Human trafficking affects millions of people worldwide and happens in communities of every size. It strips individuals of their freedom, dignity and basic human rights.

Awareness is one of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against trafficking. By learning the warning signs, supporting survivors, and speaking out against exploitation, we can help create safer communities for everyone.

Trouble at home is often a common factor in the stories of trafficked teens. Young people naturally seek out places where they feel valued, accepted, and loved.

One of the most powerful ways to protect children from traffickers is to create a safe, stable, and supportive home environment. Keep communication open, listen without judgment, and have age-appropriate conversations about online safety, healthy relationships, and exploitation.

For many survivors, healing begins the moment someone stays.

Not to fix.
Not to control.
Not to rescue.

Just to consistently show up with safety, compassion, and care.

When Ella shared these words with our team, we were reminded that hope is often rebuilt through relationship. Through advocates who answer the phone. Through safe adults who keep their promises. Through people willing to walk beside survivors in the long process of healing.

“You both are the reason I found the courage to hope again.”

That kind of trust is sacred.

And it reminds us that trauma-informed care is not just about services.
It is about human connection.

Names and details have been changed for privacy and safety.
