Teach For America Greater Tulsa

Teach For America Greater Tulsa One day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. Everyone has a right to learn. That’s a serious injustice.

But in our country today, the education you receive depends on where you live, what your parents earn, and the color of your skin. And in the national movement to right it, our contribution is the leadership of remarkable people. Our people—diverse and passionate—start in low-income classrooms, where the stakes are highest. We help them become teachers who can dramatically expand students’ opportu

nities. But our teachers don’t just teach their students, they learn from them. They gain a better understanding of the problems and the opportunities in our education system and use those lessons to define their path forward. Many stay in the classroom. Others leave. Both paths matter because to set things right, we need leaders in all areas of education and social justice united in a vision that one day, all kids will have access to an excellent education. Last night, we connected with our community and network during a discussion centered on education policies and how they move from the capitol to classrooms.

Special thanks to Whitney Cipolla, MPA (Greater Tulsa ‘17) who facilitated the conversation and shared from her experience and leadership, about the legislative process, resources to follow and interpret education legislation, and opportunities to apply our learnings in service of improving outcomes for all students.

We look forward to building upon the conversation and continuing to work with our educators, schools and communities in service of providing all students an excellent education.

Thank you to all who joined us, and to our event sponsors - QuikTrip, Price Family Properties, TTCU Federal Credit Union, Bama Companies, Inc., Capital Homes, and Tulsa Community College. Together, we can continue to provide an excellent education to our students.

Our network of over 330 alumni across Greater Tulsa continue to work toward our mission of ensuring all students have access to an excellent education as they lead in classrooms, community organizations, courtrooms, and more.

Check out this spotlight, featuring Pierre Robertson (Greater Tulsa '14), who shares, "In the classroom, I learned how powerful it is to advocate for someone based on what they are capable of, rather than what others assume about them. Every year, I pushed my students to do more than expected during their classroom presentations. I knew that whatever the bar was—low or high—my students would meet it because I had seen the hard work they put in behind the scenes."
