At The Mine, our goal is to combine the best of entrepreneurial innovation and sustainability with the best of the social sector's compassion and empathy, applying business principles and startup methods to creatively address community issues. The Mine experience is a 4-month innovative problem-so

lving program for top nonprofits and businesses in Tulsa. Teams learn a human-centered design curriculum sourced from top management consulting firms and LEAN startup methodology. Teams create impact by applying these principles to their organizations and providing real-time solutions to problems that have an impact on the Tulsa community. We have completed 25+ social impact projects and trained community leaders in entrepreneurial thinking, human-centered design, and startup best practices. The Mine was founded in Tulsa in 2013 by I-CCEW, the George Kaiser Family Foundation, and the Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation. The Mine is powered by The University of Oklahoma Ronnie K. Irani Center for the Creation of Economic Wealth (I-CCEW).

Our Fall 2024 Mine Cohort began today! With 7 different projects, we are exploring different needs in education (from Pre-K all the way through post-graduate), anti-racism in theology, affordable housing solutions, humanizing divorce, and assisted living. An important mindset in Design Thinking is Make It! When the goal is to get impactful solutions out into the world you can’t stay in the realm of theory. You have to make your ideas real.

We have a bias toward action, and that means getting ideas out of our heads and into the hands of the people we’re looking to serve. In the end, it doesn’t matter what you use, or how beautiful the result is, the goal is always to convey an idea, share it, and learn how to make it better.

James recalls, “My time in the Mine Fellowship was transformational. I learned to think about problems not as an expert, but from the perspective of the people experiencing the problems. The practice of human centered design has now become a key tenant of my work in city government...The Mine prepared me for taking the next step in leadership and civic engagement that has helped me to serve the residents of Tulsa.”
