Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” - Luke 2:28-32

May you and your family have a restful and meaningful Christmas!

Merry Christmas,
The ICO Team

"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins...'and they will call him Immanuel' (which means 'God with us')". - Matt. 1:21,23
As we reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, let's remember that Jesus came to be "God with us" and to do an incredible work. He came to save us completely from our sins—not only from the penalty of sin through His substitutionary death on the cross, but also from the effects of sinful living by giving us an example he expects us to follow and empowers us to follow. This salvation is a complete package! When Jesus saves us, He saves us from both the penalty of sin and the fruit of sinful living.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer coined the phrase "cheap grace" in his 1937 book on discipleship. In reaction to efforts to merit our salvation through works, Protestantism, like a pendulum, has swung to the other side and presents a Gospel that is just cerebral and intellectual. It is no wonder why the church seems impotent and ineffective at reaching people for Jesus. Oswald Chamber says, "The challenge the missionary faces isn't that people are difficult to save or that the world is full of indifference. The missionary's challenge lies in maintaining a relationship with Jesus Christ." When Christ is formed within his Church and we are becoming like him, He will raise up fishers of men, ambassadors for Jesus. Unless the world sees Jesus in us, there will be nothing in us that attracts them to Him. If we are to effectively carry out the Great Commission, we must take up Jesus' call and "follow" him and lead others to do the same.

We are grateful that our Thanksgiving event on Saturday went so well! We had 105 in attendance. We saw several new volunteers involved and lots of students, new and old. Somehow the food fed everyone! Thank you to everyone that participated and for all of you that prayed over the event. Please continue to pray for the many relationships and Gospel seeds that come from events like these.

What is Biblical faith and how should we talk about it when we share our "faith"? Recently, Greg Koukl wrote an excellent article on how the definition of faith has radically changed and no longer reflects a Biblical definition. I'll post a link below to his original article titled "It is Time to Forget 'Faith'". It is a quick read and worth 10 minutes of your time. It is important that we use the right vocabulary when we share about Jesus. We want to use vocabulary that invites deeper questions. If our hearers only hear that we have "faith" in Jesus and they interpret that as some blind leap of faith apart from clear evidence then the conversation ends there. If however, we use a different approach like Greg recommends, and we say something akin to "I'm convinced that..." that invites our hearer to respond with a follow up like "what has convinced you of that?" Having a good grasp of the vocabulary opens the way for greater discussion!

"The key to the problems that arise in missionary work lies in God’s hand, not humanity’s. The key isn’t hard work or common sense. It isn’t education or medical aid. It isn’t even evangelizing. The key is prayer...'Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest,' and he will engineer your circumstances and send you out." —Oswald Chambers

Jesus tells us to "go" and make disciples (Matthew 28:19). Acts 1:8 tells us how: we will be His "witnesses" by the "power of the Holy Spirit". In a similar way, 2 Corinthians 5:20 tells us that we are "Christ's ambassadors" and God is "making his appeal through us". Galatians 2:20 says we have been crucified with Jesus and we no longer live but rather Christ lives in us. Am I prepared to be His witness? Am I going forth by the power of the Holy Spirit? Do I accurately reflect the heart of my father as His ambassador? Have I died to myself so that it is Jesus coming out of me and not my own ambition? Before we can "go" we must first "come". Jesus said "come follow me and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19). Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Oswald Chambers says, "I must know how to get myself alone with him. I must take time to worship the Being whose name I bear. Am I weary and burdened, as so many missionaries are? Then, says Jesus, 'Come to me.'"

Before we can effectively "go" we must make sure we are first "coming" and following Jesus' way of life.

Make time to wait on God each day! The great missionary, Hudson Taylor says, "it is not lost time to wait upon God". Do I have the margin and space in my life to wait upon God? Your effectiveness in "going" will depend on your transformation through your "coming". Let's make it a priority to wait on God and spend time with our Master each day. We must be His disciple before we can make other disciples!

Our fall gathering on Saturday turned out well. While our group was a little smaller than previous years and we could not have a fire due to the burn ban, we still had a great time with many of our international students! Thank you Travis & Julie Dean for opening your home up.

Our annual Fall Bonfire is this Saturday, October 26th. While there is a burn ban in place this year, we do plan to have fun and spend time with our amazing students anyway. Please sign up to attend. This is a crockpot dinner. We need volunteers to prepare a crockpot dinner pre-cooked and we'll provide a table with electrical outlets to keep the meal warm. Further instructions on food will be provided at signup. Signup Link: https://app.donorview.com/jvE4g.
