Happy National Prairie Day!🌾

Healthy prairies need more than grass—they need bison. 🦬

Through grazing, seed distribution, and natural ground disturbance, bison have helped shaped the Great Plains throughout history, supporting a variety of plant life and creating habitats for birds, pollinators, and other species.

Visit the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve to spot our bison at work helping create resilient and diverse ecosystems.

Traversing 31 states, including Oklahoma, the Mississippi River and its tributaries nourish crops, transport goods, provide recreational opportunities, and sustain robust fisheries.

This Mississippi River Day, we are joining 1 Mississippi celebrating the connection that ties our waterways together. Oklahoma sits in the Mississippi River Basin, meaning many of the rivers and streams found here connect to the larger Mississippi River system in some way.

That connection is why we are working to restore and protect freshwater systems, like the Blue River, to reduce runoff, improve water quality, and protect natural resources that communities and wildlife count on daily while also contributing to the long-term health of waterways across the basin.

Three little bears, one big milestone! 🐻🐻🐻

Earlier this month our trail camera at the J.T. Nickel Family Nature & Wildlife Preserve captured an exciting sight! Three bear cubs were spotted trailing behind a sow (female bear), marking the first set of triplets we've observed on the Preserve!

Most often, when we spot bear cubs on the Preserve there are only two. Seeing three cubs is an exciting sign of the high-quality habitat and plentiful food sources found at the Preserve. This also highlights the dedication of our staff, who work hard every day to protect these landscapes for all the species that call them home.

A lifelong Oklahoman who loves the outdoors, Lance is no stranger to our preserves and we’re glad he’s officially part of the team.

Lance enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, fishing, and the occasional round of golf. We’re excited to have his skills and knowledge on our team. Welcome, Lance!

Today, we’re proud to celebrate Bob as a Pillar of the Prairie, honored with the Oklahoma Award from the Oklahoma Chapter of The Wildlife Society - its most distinguished honor, recognizing outstanding contributions to the profession of wildlife management in Oklahoma.

From reintroducing bison to the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve to advancing science‑based land stewardship, Bob Hamilton has spent decades shaping conservation in Oklahoma. His vision, passion, and deep respect for the land - and the people who steward it - have had an impact far beyond our state.

Congratulations, Bob! Thank you for protecting and restoring the wildlife and landscape that make Oklahoma so special.

On April 4, we partnered with Tulsa Urban Wilderness Coalition (TUWC) for a trail design and build training at the Pearl Jackson Crosstimbers Preserve. Led by Mike Crockett of Anthrocene Contracting, it was a wonderful opportunity for TNC staff, TUWC members, and local trail managers and parks to build their knowledge, deepen understanding of best practices, and create a sustainable trail at the preserve. 🍃
