Outdoorsmen In Action

Outdoorsmen In Action Outdoorsmen in Action is the first disaster relief organization born out of the outdoor industry. We are outdoorsmen impacting disaster survivors.

In the wake of the 2013 Moore, Oklahoma tornado, veteran relief coordinator Nick Parsons and fellow emergency responder, Shannon Young, debriefed after their relief efforts. Several things had become painfully clear. Most response teams, despite their best intentions, were woefully disorganized and unprepared for what they encountered. Many volunteers were unskilled, which created an unnecessary b

urden on the disaster site. They also noticed that, although the survivors were provided with food and water, other essential needs were virtually ignored. Nick and Shannon began to envision a highly tactical response team whose mission would include more than just food distribution and debris removal. This team would be focused on providing comprehensive relief to survivors - physical, emotional, and spiritual. They would also come alongside other organizations, bringing expertise and guidance to streamline efforts. Being outdoorsmen, Nick and Shannon recognized that few groups were as uniquely qualified to assist as their fellow outdoorsmen and they knew that they needed to harness that resource. Resolute in their belief that such a team had to exist, Outdoorsmen in Action was born. Executive Director and co-Founder Nick Parsons has been active in disaster relief for over 10 years, and has worked Katrina Hurricane in 2005, the California wildfires in 2010, the Nashville flood in 2010, the Joplin tornado in 2011, Hurricane Sandy in 2013, and many tornadoes in Oklahoma. He currently works in Operations for the Outdoor Channel. Director of Operations and co-Founder Shannon Young worked his first tornado site in Moore, OK in 2013. He has been involved in the outdoor industry for the past 25 years, getting his start as an outside sales rep for Duck Commander. He is the Founder of 100,000 Kids in the Outdoors™, Archery Encounters™, CrossLife Apparel™, and co-Founder of Outdoor Heritage TV™. He is also the manager for 2014 Rayovac® FLW Champion and WalMart® FLW Series professional angler Zack Birge.

Our plan for the current hurricane threat: all volunteers will be ran thru the CrowdSource Rescue platform. If you’re a veteran team, you know what to do. We’ll see you on Zello.

If it’s your first time wanting to help, head over to crowdsourcerescue.com to get signed up and vetted. There’s training material, dispatch guidelines, and more. Onboarding has gotten significantly easier since last season. You’ll be up and running quick and the dispatchers are amazing. Then find us on the Zello communication app.

All out-of-state teams, please hold until accurate intel can be gathered. You very well may be needed, but let’s not fly blind.

As always, if you can’t physically help but want to contribute, tax-deductible donations can be made at outdoorsmeninaction.org. We’ll make sure they get where they need to go immediately.

Be safe out there!

"Calling all available boats, calling all available boats"

Do you know what the largest civilian rescue operation was?

It wasn't Harvey.
It wasn't even Dunkirk.

It was on 9/11/01. Over 500,000 people were evacuated off Lower Manhattan by an armada of civilian boats in the span of a few hours.

It was just good-hearted boat operators, trying to make a difference to people having the worst days of their life.

It is in these sorts of days, during our darkest moments, that we often see the best of humanity shine through.

Today, may you reflect on what it means to lose innocent lives, what it means to mourn, but also what it means to bravely love in the face of darkness.

We have a big need we'd like to throw out for those who want to help flood victims. We need a dedicated rescue boat. We've been doing water rescues for years using volunteer's boats. In Hurricane Harvey we had over 10 boats deployed at one time. And while we actually prefer to operate that way, the sheer mass of some of these disasters makes it impossible to have the resources we need in every location. So we're fundraising for a used 18' flat-bottom console boat with a 40+ hp motor that will allow our Search and Rescue team, along with other trained responders, to offer help immediately, rather than waiting for volunteers to hopefully be able to step up at all hours of the day and night. We're aiming to raise around $5000-7000 for it. Unless someone has one they want to donate - we wouldn't turn it down! Will you consider helping us get this done ASAP? All donations are tax-deductible....and heck, we may even do a drawing among donors to name the thing. Every little bit helps. Thanks for caring about your neighbors in need.

URGENT NEED: If you have a trailer or don’t mind doing some heavy lifting, we have an important need for you in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Tomorrow morning the Parks and Rec maintenance facility is being evacuated due to rising water levels. Inside is much of the equipment and supplies that will be required to help recovery when the water goes down. We have to get that stuff to safety so that it can be used during recovery.

1060 W Wekiwa Road, Sand Springs, OK. The Case Community Center parking lot @ 7am. Comment below or message us if you can be there.
