March has been very dry. We have the winds working to further dry out the garden. It is important that you water your garden, especially your roses. The forecast calls for the temperatures to be in the 50 - 70 range so given enough moisture the roses will make use of it and continue their journey towards the first bloom. I am seeing buds on some of my shrub roses.

If you have not pruned it will be safe to prune now. If you are unsure about pruning just cut out the dead, damaged and dinky canes. The rose will amaze you with its ability to survive our care and neglect.

April 9th is our next meeting and we will be instructing you about some of the new roses available in addition to answering any and all care questions.

It seems to either be hot or cold. Some days I would like a mixing handle to mix in some of the hot with the cold and come out with some warm spring weather. We know that the weather don't work that way. The temperatures do not stay in one category for very long.

We are experiencing some cool/cold weather here on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday should be a nice spring day again. Saturday even warmer. Friday will be a good day to give your garden a spraying of horticultural oil. Since most of the foliage is gone from our roses it will be easy to cover the canes well. The purpose is to seal in any disease or insects that are over wintering under the surface of our plants. Follow directions on the container. Some recommend not to spray if the temperature is above 80 degrees which is forecast for Saturday.

This oil is not toxic to you or pets when used according to directions.

If you received a lot of ice it will bee important to check your garden for broken limbs and damaged plants. Dead and damaged limbs should be removed so they will not cause additional damage should we have another ice storm.

February is a good time to apply a spraying of horticultural oil. The purpose is to seal the canes to prevent insects or disease that has over wintered under the surface of the cane to emerge and cause damage as the weather warms up. Follow directions on the label. These oils are not toxic and safe to use around your pets and kids. They are about the same as the castor oil our mother give us.

It is not time to prune your roses yet.

We have gone through a second period of subfreezing temperatures and have a third one forecast for next weekend. We have a couple of days above normal. IF you did not get your garden watered last month This afternoon and tomorrow will be another chance. This is important to the survival of your plantings.

Warmer temperatures are coming along with the possibility of rain. Our gardens need moisture! We have learned that a forecast does not help. When the temperatures are above freezing give your garden a good watering. Even if we get the rain forecast it won't be too much for the garden.

We have record low temperatures coming into NE Oklahoma tonight. At this time you can't do much for your roses. If you have any liquid chemicals in a storage shed or unheated garage you should take precautions to prevent them from freezing. If you can't bring them into a protected area, you can wrap them in newspaper or some insulating material and pack them into an insulated ice chest. Place the ice chest where it is out of the wind and protected from the cold. In the spring check the chemicals. If they do not look normal, dispose of them according to instructions on the container.

Our regular meetings resume Sunday, September 11, at 2 PM in the Tulsa Garden Center auditorium. We have Linda Vater from OKC channel 4. She will be speaking on English gardens. Come and enjoy some refreshments, door prizes and fellowship with fellow Rosearians.

If you live in n area that received a good rain of 1/2inch or more this will be a good time to lightly fertilize your roses. Fish emulsion would be a good choice. Follow instructions on the container. Easiest would probably be using a hose end sprayer with something like Miracle-Grow. Nitrogen is the primary need they have. Not sure how much rain you had? Water first.

The Tulsa Garden Center has scheduled another w**d out in the Tulsa Rose Garden. It will be July 16 from 7 AM until 10 AM to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Bring a hoe or some type of w**ding tool along with your work gloves. Water and donuts will be supplied.

Please consider spending some time in community service helping restore our Rose Garden. We have to get rid of the w**ds before anything else can be done as improvements.

06/25/2016

The Tulsa Rose Society will not meet during July and August. We will resume our meetings on September 11th. Details about our program and meeting will be published later.

06/10/2016

Sunday is to be HOT with the heat index close to 100 degrees. Come and join the Tulsa Rose Society at the Tulsa Garden Center at 2 PM for a big bowl of ice cream with your favorite toppings.

If you have a favorite rose blooming in your yard bring it for a moment of Show-n-Tell. What makes the rose special to you?

Consulting Rotarians will be available to answer your questions as always.
