The National Indian Education Association (NIEA) is calling on Tribal leaders, educators, and partners across Indian Country to help elevate the need for a Senate hearing on Johnson O’Malley (JOM) funding.

Ongoing shortfalls and funding gaps are impacting Native students nationwide. It is critical that Congress hears directly from those experiencing these challenges.

Use our template to submit a hearing request to the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and help ensure Tribal voices are part of this conversation.

NCAI seeking to hire Policy Associates to support advocacy and policy work that advances Tribal sovereignty and strengthens the voice of Indian Country at the national level.

This role supports the NCAI Policy Team through research, policy analysis, legislative tracking, and coordination with Tribal leaders, federal partners, and coalition organizations working on key issues affecting Tribal Nations.

This position is remote and offers the opportunity to contribute to national policy efforts that impact Tribal governments and communities across Indian Country.

In accordance with NIEA’s bylaws, the individual elected to this position must reside in the Northeast region of the United States.

On Thursday, March 19, at 6 p.m., we’re gathering at the Oklahoma History Center to honor those dedicated to preserving our state’s story. The evening will feature the induction of four scholars into the Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame. It is a night dedicated to the researchers, educators, and authors who work tirelessly to keep Oklahoma’s history alive. Below is a brief overview of today’s highlight, Dr. Don Fixico.

A proud Muscogee, Seminole, Shawnee, and Sac & Fox citizen, Dr. Donald L. Fixico was raised in the Shawnee and Seminole areas and earned his PhD from the University of Oklahoma in 1980. Now a Regents’ and Distinguished Professor at Arizona State University, Dr. Fixico is a world-renowned scholar with 20 books to his credit—including his forthcoming work, The Lighthorse Police. His expertise has been utilized at the highest levels of government, including a presidential appointment to the National Advisory Committee for the National Endowment for the Humanities and an appointment to the national advisory committee on Reconciliation in Place Names for the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Tribal education leaders are invited to join an upcoming webinar, Navigating the Winds of Change: Understanding the IAAs & Their Impact on Tribal Education Systems.

Hosted by the American Institutes for Research in partnership with NIEA, the Tribal Education Departments National Assembly, and the National Congress of American Indians, this session will help Tribal education systems better understand new Interagency Agreements (IAAs) among the U.S. Department of Education, Department of the Interior, and Department of Labor.
