Our hearts are broken with the senseless loss of so many innocent lives over the past week in Israel and Gaza. With the murder of 6-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume in Chicago over the weekend, we now see the senseless repercussions rhetoric hitting close to home, and for us, evoking the trauma of a life cut far too short by hate, ignorance, and bigotry. One of our founders and Khalid's brother, Rami, had this reflection on recent events as he turned 40, acknowledging that the entirety of his life has been punctuated by war, violence, and hate.
"Turning 40 over this past week was mixed with emotion, as we now turn our attention again to the middle east. In my 40 years of life (and 40 years prior), war and bloodshed have brought so much loss and destruction to our family’s homeland in Lebanon and the entire region. Now as we turn our attention to Gaza and Israel, we are appalled by the targeted barbaric acts against civilians last Saturday and horrified by the impending & inescapable violence and mounting loss of life. One recurring theme that is always present is that extremism and extremist leadership give rise to hateful rhetoric, ignorance and ultimately dehumanization. Hate against Muslims or Jews or Asians or Blacks or Hispanics or Arabs all come from that same place. This week, we’ve seen synagogues and mosques on high alert, clashes on campus and in the workplace, and just today we heard of the unspeakable murder of a 6-year-old boy in Chicago. His crime was being Palestinian. Having experienced the loss of my brother Khalid to hate, no family should have to experience that, much less the family of a 6-year-old child. It has been difficult to find the right words but I ask everyone, religious or not, to please pray for peace in a region that has seen too much suffering and bloodshed. Please pray for lives lost, homes destroyed, people displaced, and families torn apart. While we may not agree on everything, we shouldn’t let “other-ism” infect our thoughts and destroy our collective humanity whether it’s here or there, please do not let hate cloud your judgment."
