This photo shows Khalid Jabara’s sister and niece during Hanukkah. Her preschool was the preschool at Bnai Emunah Synogogue, a synagogue that supported our family with story hours and community care after Khalid was killed.

This week, during the first night of Hanukkah, a hate-motivated shooting targeted the Jewish community in Sydney.

At the Khalid Jabara Foundation, we condemn all hate crimes, in every form. We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community and remain committed to awareness, education, prevention, and community care.

📸 Swipe through to remember Khalid — his sense of humor, curiosity, and love for our family.

🕊️ Today marks 9 years since Khalid Jabara was taken from us in a brutal hate crime. His death broke our hearts, but his life continues to move us — and many others — to fight for a future free from hate.

We also remember Heather Heyer today. In Khalid's name, and in honor of Heather Heyer, Matthew Shepard, and James Byrd Jr., we’re calling on you to help protect critical programs that fight hate violence.

🛑 The White House has proposed eliminating funding for:

The Shepard-Byrd Hate Crimes Program

The Jabara-Heyer NO HATE Act grants

These programs support victims, improve hate crime reporting, and fund local responses to bias-motivated violence. They were overwhelmingly bipartisan when passed and we are appalled that they are now at risk. We cannot let them disappear.

📣 Take action today:

📞 Urge your representatives to maintain or increase funding in the 2026 federal budget.

For Khalid. For all of us.

With love,
The Jabara Family

We're wrapping up our time in Geneva! U.N. Human Rights Committee Member Marcia Kran put a question about hate crimes on the record during the U.S. review. We are thrilled that our testimony, along with that of our friend & fellow advocate, Taylor Dumpson, made a difference! To be honest, though, we were not impressed with the U.S. government's response. We will continue to demand more. We know that there is still so much work to be done, but we are grateful for this week in Geneva. We have so much admiration for our friends and colleagues, like Taylor and the SPLC crew. Our work isn't done, we will continue to advocate for survivors. We'll see you back home!

On Monday, Board Member Shagah Zakerion posed a question to the U.S. delegation during the NGO briefing. Shagah asked the delegation what the U.S. is doing to combat hate speech, radicalization, and extremism, especially online, and its direct link to violence and hate crimes. We firmly believe that it is not only the work of survivors and allies, but also of our governments to help combat hate at the earliest possible stage.

We just arrived to the United Nations for the first of two US reviews. This is the meeting where the UN Human Rights Committee will question the United States following days of testimony from NGO and civil society organizations and impacted individuals.

Our hearts are broken with the senseless loss of so many innocent lives over the past week in Israel and Gaza. With the murder of 6-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume in Chicago over the weekend, we now see the senseless repercussions rhetoric hitting close to home, and for us, evoking the trauma of a life cut far too short by hate, ignorance, and bigotry. One of our founders and Khalid's brother, Rami, had this reflection on recent events as he turned 40, acknowledging that the entirety of his life has been punctuated by war, violence, and hate.

"Turning 40 over this past week was mixed with emotion, as we now turn our attention again to the middle east. In my 40 years of life (and 40 years prior), war and bloodshed have brought so much loss and destruction to our family’s homeland in Lebanon and the entire region. Now as we turn our attention to Gaza and Israel, we are appalled by the targeted barbaric acts against civilians last Saturday and horrified by the impending & inescapable violence and mounting loss of life. One recurring theme that is always present is that extremism and extremist leadership give rise to hateful rhetoric, ignorance and ultimately dehumanization. Hate against Muslims or Jews or Asians or Blacks or Hispanics or Arabs all come from that same place. This week, we’ve seen synagogues and mosques on high alert, clashes on campus and in the workplace, and just today we heard of the unspeakable murder of a 6-year-old boy in Chicago. His crime was being Palestinian. Having experienced the loss of my brother Khalid to hate, no family should have to experience that, much less the family of a 6-year-old child. It has been difficult to find the right words but I ask everyone, religious or not, to please pray for peace in a region that has seen too much suffering and bloodshed. Please pray for lives lost, homes destroyed, people displaced, and families torn apart. While we may not agree on everything, we shouldn’t let “other-ism” infect our thoughts and destroy our collective humanity whether it’s here or there, please do not let hate cloud your judgment."

Today - Haifa presented on hate crimes in America to the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations in an informal meeting. Today's meeting provides context and witness testimonies by the individuals and organizations working to ensure the US honors its commitments to human rights as outlined in UN treaties. Next week, these committee members will use these testimonies and reports to inform their questions during the formal briefing of the United States delegation. It was a powerful three hour briefing spanning many topics and we were fortunate to advocate for hate crime victims in this discussion.
